Qnap do advertise 24.4 MB write speed for the TS-210 (third row from the bottom) so you do actually have performance well
above what's specified.
Possible explanations to the big discrepancy could be performance improvements made in later firmwares and/or your performance numbers being inaccurate.
No, RAID has never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups you will eventually lose data!
