New version of Twonky isnt displaying correctly

Postby SupraWez » Sat May 05, 2012 3:25 am

Hey All,

Ive have my trusty QNAP 219P for a long time now, serving files via Twonky to a couple of media players and all was working great, that is until today when I upgraded to 3.6.1 Build 0302T, now the new version of Twonky has totally messed up how my media library is displayed.

I like to keep things simple and have the following folder layout :-

music/folder for each album
photos/folder for each collection, holiday1, holiday2, etc
video/folder for each collection, ie TV show1, TV show2, Family Movies etc

The only problem is now when browsing via media player everything is combing together videos is no longer just showing videos from the video folder its combing any videos it finds in the photo folder and music folder, the same for music and pictures, I dont want this, how can I stop it happening.

Thanks

Wes

Hi

Hopefully a simple one to fix! :)

Go to the Twonky config web page, then click on the sharing link, the check that the media types are set accordingly for each path set (you'll likely find there's only one path set and it's set to show all types of media). In other words, you can change it to set one path to point to your music and then set the type as music only, then set another path to videos and the type to videos only, then set a third one to point to your pictures and set that one to pictures only (then hit the save button and it'll prompt you to hit the restart Twonky button).

Hello Bri,

Thanks for the reply, I did try that but sadly it didnt work how I wanted.

Is there a basic display tree XML that can be used to give same results as the previous version?

Hi

That's very odd as it's working fine on my setup. I actually use custom trees (to suit my large music collection) but the basic Twonky containers exists alongside my own ones. I wonder if the control point in your media renderer is somehow aggregating the folder containers and thus showing unexpected results. Try using the Twonky web interface to navigate to the folder containers under music, pictures and videos and see if are they all showing the expected contents. You could also try a third party control point, just to check and see what that shows in each of the folder containers (to prove whether it's Twonky or your media streamer's control point that's getting things wrong). Even if you don't have a Linn DS, you could try Kinsky control point (as it wouldn't cost you anything other than your time) just as a test to see what it shows.

Hi,

I am using a PS3 as the media player but it displays the same messed up results as a desktop PC using the web based browser on port 9000.

The directory structure hasn't changed only the version of twonky since the firmware update which I am now really regretting :(

Is there a way to roll back the twonky version as this display setup is far to messy.

Which version did you have that worked before? There are a few previous versions of Twonky 6 as QPKG's (6.0.34 is still on the Qnap server, if that's any use, I'll look at my notes for a link to it). I think there is a Twonky 4 QPKG as well, but I'd have to check that. In any case, something is causing the issue as my one doesn't behave that way, so it would maybe be better to try to find the fault. I assume you've tried a database rebuild as that might fix it. It could also be corrupt media, but that's a bit trickier to find. The best way to do that is to point Twonky to some of the media and rebuild the database. If that works, point it at the remaining media and see if it goes haywire again. Assuming it does, point it to half of that media and see if it works or not. You can relatively swiftly drive down to the duff file by doing that halving process.

I believe it may have been the old Twonky 4 as my firmware was very old until I updated to the latest version a couple of days ago.

The database has been rebuilt a few times as I have tried the different navigation tree settings under the getting started tab but they all do the same thing.

Basically, I recall under the old version that you could specify what sub category items would be listed, this seems to have all changed as its now configured via the XML files which appear to be very very complicated, why oh why they went this route from a simple line of text I dont know.

Twonky is trying to be too ** clever and is displaying any video it finds under video instead of just the ones I want it to display, is there a way I can fix this with the XML files?

Just thought I would add that since the firmware update Twonky is at v6.0.38.

Hi

I've only got about 4 videos and 50 pictures (and 40,000 FLAC files) but looking at the folder container in the videos container, I can see the four folders that I have and each has it's video within it (same story ith the pictures one). I'm slightly puzzled as to what you are seeing as on my one, it all looks exactly as I'd expect it to look (and I've only changed the music container, so the video and picture ones will be the same as yours). What are you seeing in the video / folder container; is it just a list of all videos in one big folder? There is a Twonky 4 QPKG kicking about, so a Qnap forum search for that should find the page pretty swiftly and thus give you back the same system that you had before. I'm still thinking there's maybe another issue that's causing your unexpected results, but maybe I've misunderstood what you're describing.

OK let me try and describe this better :)

On the QNAP I have three main media folders, Music, Photos and Video, in the folders are sub folders, something like this :-

MUSIC / Album1 - contains tracks, covers, possibly music video
MUSIC / Album2 - contains just tracks
MUSIC / Album3 - contains tracks and covers
PHOTOS / Holiday 2008 - contains pics
PHOTOS / Holiday 2009 - contains pics
PHOTOS / Holiday 2010 - contains pics and video clip
PHOTOS / Holiday 2011 - contains pics
VIDEO / Series 1 - contains movie files
VIDEO / Series 2 - contains movie files
VIDEO / Movies - contains movie files
VIDEO / Family Videos - contains movie files

Now on the media player I only want files under video to be displayed when selecting video but as an example its also displaying the videos from the photos and music folders as well.

On the old version of twonky VIDEO, MUSIC and PHOTO were locked into search paths for only those folder trees, im sure the same can be done here but I dont know how :(

Ah. I see what you are saying now. Tomorrow, I'll try putting a couple of videos in the picture and music directories and see if they are added to the video container (as that sounds like a bug). I'll post back as soon as I've done some testing (I'm on Twonky 6.0.39, so I'll be able to check and see if that one works; there is a QPKG version of it available, so if it does work, that could be a fix).

Hi

I downloaded four test video files from here. I put the test.mov and test.wmv in a new folder alongside my music folders and the test.avi and test.mpg in a new folder alongside my photo folders. Twonky correctly didn't show these 4 new files in the video/folder container (so it works exactly as it should do). I then moved the new folders to sit under alongside my other video folders and all four now showed up (in their appropriate folders) in my videos/folder container (so again, that is doing exactly as we'd expect it to do).

I'm starting to think it could be a bug in the version you are running, so I'd suggest you install the Twonky 6.0.39 QPKG and see if that sorts you out.

The new Twonky 6.0.39 QPKG's can be downloaded from the below links:

Marvell based Qnaps (TX-x09): here
Marvell based Qnaps (TS-x10 & TS-x19): here
Intel based Qnaps (TS-x39 & TS-x59): here

The previous Twonky 6.0.38 QPKG's can be downloaded from the below links:

Marvell based Qnaps (TX-x09): here
Marvell based Qnaps (TS-x10 & TS-x19): here
Intel based Qnaps (TS-x39 & TS-x59): here

As discussed before, the types should be set as outlined in red (note that my paths will be different from your ones as I've set Twonky's 'start' directory as being on the Multimedia share; you will have the share names as part of the paths, so please ignore the actual paths that I have shown set in the below example):

Image2.jpg

I've also set my rescan to -1 as Twonky have a history of 'odd things' happening when it's set to 0 (which is my usual preferred setting). If the QPKG doesn't sort you out, it might be worth trying the -1 rescan as well. If none of the above things sort it out, that would point me to thinking there might be a corrupted media file (or non media file) that's corrupting the Twonky database, but let's try the 6.0.39 QPKG and rescan to -1 tricks before worrying about a media issue. Of course, I've only a few videos and thus it could be a bug which only appears when the database gets above a certain size (i.e. it only manifests itself when you've a lot of videos) but that said, I do have 40,000 FLAC files, so even though they are music files (as opposed to videos) I'd have thought that's a pretty good test of the system's capabilities when under a little stress.

Fingers crossed and good luck!! :)
