Streaming .m4a Files to Samsung Allshare

Postby zoon » Fri May 11, 2012 9:34 am

I recently started using itunes match to uprade lots of my old 128Kbit mp3s.
Streaming all other kind of files incl. mkv to my Samsung UE55C87xx has never been a problem since Twonky 6.0.38 except for embedded subtitles.

With the the lack of support for mkv's on samsung tvs running older twonky versions I had to stream mkvs stored on my nas trough PSM on my pc (realtime-transcode if necessary) to my PS3 ending up on my TV causing some serious power consumption for simply watching a movie or listen to music.

My goal is basicly just using twonkyserver running on the NAS and my TV as only client but m4a somehow refuse to stream but according to the specs the TV supports AAC.
Streaming m4a directly to my ps3 did work.

Has anyone experience streaming m4a to a Samsung DLNA-certified device or any suggestions how to get it work?

Help is really appreciated and sorry for my bad english ;)

Most likely the profile Twonky has for the Samsung TV is not up to date. Double check that it is using the Samsung TV profile, go into Twonky control panel -> twonkymedia settings -> media receivers and look for IP of Samsung TV then see if Samsung TV profile is in place next to it.

Failing that you could try Serviio instead if your NAS can run it, Serviio have much more up to date DLNA profiles for Samsung TV's, plus real time remuxing of mkv to mp4 too so your PS3 can still play those.

Thanks for your input but the Twonky is definitely using the "Samsung-TV" profile, otherwise mkv's wouldn't work.
Anyway don't have trouble streaming mkvs but streaming Apples .m4a Audioformat which my TV should support.

There seems no way to fix this except transcode .m4a to mp3 on the fly or recoding my complete library back to mp3.

I got the option on Twonky server "transcode to mp3" but that one is greyed out.

Double check your in case your m4a files using Apple lossless as that's the only reason I can think of why they wouldn't be working, Apple lossless is rarely supported by anything other than Apple devices.

But regular aac/m4a files should play on any recent Samsung TV, maybe Samsung only support AAC-LC and your files are encoded into AAC-HE which is another possibility. MediaInfo will tell you the codecs used in the m4a container.

I was wrong thinking Itunes-Match is giving me Apple lossless-Files. The files are lossy AAC m4a 256Kbit files which play just fine everywhere except on the Samsung TV.
I also tried playing some tracks directly from an usb-stick on my TV which doesn't work. But streaming the exact same files from another DLNA-Server like media connect (running on my Iphone) works. Really confusing.
