Supported 4TB

Postby Kurgan » Wed May 16, 2012 2:17 pm

Hi

Is Hitachi HDS724040ALE640 (http://www.pr.com/press-release/397875) the only supported 4TB 3.5 disk? The reason I'm asking is that this disk is quite hard to get hold of in Sweden. I don't know if it is because it's a bit old now?

I've been googling for a few days and I can't find any other supported disks. Please do not answer with a link to the compatibility list. I've seen it...

Many thanks

Considering that the compatibility list is the only source of this kind of information, what is this thread actually about? :?
QNAP, why is your homework still not done?
3.8.2 Build0301 - Codename "Titanic" - Dear customer, GTFO! NOT acceptable once again!
QTS 4.0 - Codename "Leaky Snail" - Slower than ever. Yes, we can!

Since the HDS724040ALE640 isn't on the compatibility list (http://wiki.qnap.com/wiki/Compatibility_List) but clearly is supported reading the pressrelase I wrote in the last post my logical skill told me that if 1 disk is missing perhaps more disks are missing on the list. Perhaps I thought wrong and the HDS724040ALE640 is the only one that is not there?

It is...: Check the officiall HDD compatibility list here: http://www.qnap.com/en/?sn=3877&lang=en

SATA III (6Gb/s)
Manufacturer Model Number Size (GB) Notes
Hitachi HDS724040ALE640 (H31K40003272SW) 4000

Have not spotted any other formal availability of 4 TB HDD - neither from Seagate (desktop and enterprise up to 3 TB) nor from WDC (desktop max 3 TB, enterprise max. 2 TB).

Are the new Hitachi 4TB Enterprise hard drive supported, it's very similar to their consumer version.
These are more suited for NAS devices running 24/7

What consumer vesion are you talking of here?

Thus...

...are supported: Reading and comparing educates ... the HUS724040ALE640 is the one in the compatibility list (the others are just the 3 TB and 2 TB variants).

Unless I'm wrong, it's the only 4 TB HDD readily available in the market anyway. There are no 4 TB consumer drives avaiilable yet.

This is the consumer/desktop version
http://www.hgst.com/deskstar-7k4000
This is the one listed on QNAP compatibility list
Notice the first three letters are different to the enterprise model

The enterprise/NAS model can be found here

This is not yet on the compatibily list

If one takes for granted the official compatibility list then Hitachi HDS724040ALE640 is supported.
If one takes for granted the official compatibility list then it also works for TS509Pro as no side note exists...would you assume QNAP just forgot the note out or would you assume that this is really the only >2TB 3.5" disc on the market compatible with TS509Pro?
Thanks

Of course all disks >2 TB should have both note 11 and 12 (and yes they should now remove the 3 TB remark from note 12). The list have become so complicated with all the notes so they don't seem to be able to administer it properly...
No, RAID has never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups you will eventually lose data!

Looking at the compatibility-list, there's a disagreement with the specs-list. For the TS-239 Pro II, the specs say max 3 TB, while the compatibility list says 4 TB ??? What goes?

Planning an upgrade from 2 to 3 TB, but after looking at the list I'm thinking about going the whole hog to 4.

Dont know what and where you have seen this outdated 3 TB information - here is the TS-239 Pro II product page: http://www.qnap.com/en/index.php?lang=e ... n=6687&g=0

Any older refernce mist be pure text-only information - and was ment to indicate that it supports drives >> 2 TB ... technically, there is no limit near, and there is nothing specific to 3 TB - beside of these were drives with the largest capacity available for a while.

Shumaku, on the product page you link to, if you click the "compatibility" tab, it says: "Each drive bay can hold one 3.5-inch SATA 1.5Gb/s, SATA 3Gb/s and SATA 6Gb/s hard drive of maximum 3TB capacity." - Although the list further down that page lists a 4TB drive.

Edit:
But yes, I see that there shouldn't be any reason for a 3 TB max.
Did anyone try a 4 TB drive?

You can safely ignore that. Should read somethig like

Each drive bay can hold one 3.5-inch SATA 1.5Gb/s, SATA 3Gb/s and SATA 6Gb/s hard drive. For capacity limitaitons (if any), please consult the table below.

Just my two cents.
