QNAP and TNG

Postby jparker » Tue May 22, 2012 12:36 pm

TNG is a genealogy suite that is quite rich. I am going through the process of getting it working on my QNAP 219. While I've had a few issues, it's been remarkably clean so far. I write tonight to indicate one thing that needs to be addressed.

TNG uses MySQL, using the default install of that for QNAP, the tmp directory for MySQL is /tmp - memory - and you wind up getting #126 errors when your list of names is too large (>40,000) to be handled by an ORDER BY in the limited memory granted to MySQL. I ssh'ed into the NAS (by IP address, using the main credentials), edited /etc/config/my.cnf, changed tmpdir (had to uncomment it) to a real disk directory that I created (and set permissions on to 777). After reboot the problem was cleared up.

The other non-trivial "issue" I had was setting up mail (from the QNAP) to go through an SMTP server. I used GMails free smtp server (Verizon would not take the bait), that worked cleanly.

I'll follow this post with any other issues I stumble across.

I'm pretty happy with the QNAP so far, good speed, does all sorts of things that I had been struggling to accomplish on a DLink-321. I'm tempted to buy another one as a mirror.
