Hello (and help with firmware 3.7)

Postby ben3595 » Sat Jun 09, 2012 1:18 pm

Hi All,

I have recently purchased my first QNAP, a TS-212. It's a great device and it's been happily working for months. I logged in this morning and got prompted to upgrade to firmware 3.7 - now my TS-212 no longer works.

I had it configured with a static IP and I can't connect to that anymore. The MAC address no longer appears in the ARP cache of my router (direct connected to Billion 7800n) and I can't see the MAC address in the ARP cache of my notebook even when I direct connect to the TS-212 and use 169.254.x.x. Qfinder can't find the device either. I've tried the 3 second power button reset and that doesn't make any difference. I have my entire +400GB FLAC collection on it, what can I do? I can't lose this data, it's years and years worth of collecting.

Any answers?

Cheers,

Ben

I have a TS-219p -> same problem, after updating to firmware 3.7 my device is also bricked. I also have tried the firmware recovery process but it does not work.
luckily I had a backup on a separate disk, so my TS-219p is now up again (firmware 3.6).

I'm guessing something bad happened. I was prompted to install and downloaded 3.7 last night but didn't get around to installing it before bedtime. Now I see it's gone completely from the website. Don't think I'll be rushing to install it.

Just fixed mine. I tried the firmware recovery process on my laptop which did not work but it does work on my desktop - probably due to some driver issues. Once it completed I re-load firmware 3.61 and everything is back up and running after a cold re-boot. If I try to check firmware version it now says that I'm on the most up to date - can only quess that QNAP had a glitch this morning...

I bought a TS-212 last week and yesterday it perform a firmware update to 3.7 (by live update):
i left home while it was downloading the .img file, when i came back a notification ask for reboot, i selected OK and then my nas (after rebooting) doesn't work any more…

All the led are ok (status: green; Hd1,Hd2: green; Lan: orange) but the nas seems not to be connected to the LAN; QFinder doesn't find it (i tried from different pc/mac), my computers don't see it and form the router manager (netgear) it not appear among attached devices list.

Then I tried different solutions, without any positive result:
-assign an IP address to the MAC address of the nas
-sharing wifi connection to ethernet using my mac and connect the nas directly to my computer.

Now I'm thinking about trying the firmware recovery, but after it i have to format my hard drives, or i'll find all my files as i left them?
If the nas need to format the hard drives, what could be a solution for recovery my data before? I could use mac, windows and ubuntu.

You need to take your drives out while performing the recovery!

Thanks bustermagic!
So if I perform the firmware recovery, at the end of the operation I'll have the "old" firmware and all my files, even though I haven't a backup of them.
Is that right?

I'm thinking about waiting until monday before trying... but my girlfriend start to be fed up with me about this problem so... maybe I'll try it before!

I followed the process on the QNAP support site on how to perform a firmware recovery for a TS-212. Once the process was complete I put my disks back in to the storage device, used QFinder and installed the previous firmware from a file on my desktop. Like you I had no backup before trying this - so it was risky but I could not see any other way and it worked for me. The only think I read on a web site of what NOT to do was to re-initialise the hard drives, as this would re-format them - I just put mine back in and after a reboot they mounted and worked fine for me.

I would imagine that QNAP support would have some fix posted by Monday/early next week to fix this if you're not to sure about doing the above.

So I am also a new user to the TS 212. I upgraded to firmware 3.7 yesterday. I had the same brick problems that others have described. I did the VMware firmware recovery process with success. I immediately started loading firmware 3.6.1 back in. I can't successfully load 3.6.1 because the TS 212 keeps rebooting. It appears the crash happens after the web server is up but before the TS 212 is completed booting. There is nothing in the log files except a complaint that the Firmware in the flash is different from the version 3.7 on the disk and a complaint about the media server having a problem (did not look like a fatal error).

Qfinder tells me I am still running 3.7.

Is there any way to start in a "safe mode" with less functionality to fix the firmware?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for all the replies. I have successfully restored with the VMware firmware recovery method. With my old disk back in my data is intact. I sincerely hope that someone at QNAP QA and/or Customer Service gets straight on to this 3.7 bug!

Firmware 3.7 also killed my TS-210 yesterday and since reset button and firmware recovery didn't work at all I fixed the problem by starting the Qnap with only 1 drive. I manually deleted all partitions on the second drive and put it back into the NAS. Rebuild started immediately and everything works just fine now with 3.7 .... or at least it seems work just fine.....

My TS-212 is reporting that the 3.6.1 Build 0302T is the latest. I'd already manually downloaded 3.7.0 build 0605 but guess I just delete that and wait until Live Update tells me it's time?
