Recovered 6600 + files overnight!
But I don't see any Nikon raw files although checked in Photorec. Maybe hidden?

Firstly thanks to avvidme for all the research into this post, and mostly_clueless for the possible workaround suggestion.

I accidentally deleted 30+ gigs of data for which I have no one to blame but myself. I have now enabled the recycling bin and hopefully will prevent this maddening experience from occurring again.

I am one of those cheapskates who bought the TS-212 which unfortunately comes with a Marvell cpu and thus the original instructions of this thread don't work. My setup consists of 2 1 TB drives on RAID1 so recovery was fairly straight forward. I had to invest in an external hard drive enclosure, plugged it into my pc, and from then it was simple following instructions from STEP 5 onwards.

After many hours of research, some wallowing in self-pity, stumbling onto this thread, teaching myself what "SSH into the NAS" means (total noob here), downloading putty, learning some basic unix commands, getting stuck on "permission denied" (also touched on in this thread), then realizing this might not work as my NAS doesn't have an intel cpu, experimenting with extundelete (which has a pretty steep learning curve for linux noobs), and then discovering mostly_clueless' suggestion of a possible work around, paying $70 for a external hard drive enclosure,3 hours (and counting) of data recovery, I will soon have most, if not all of my data back.

The last 2 days has been an emotional coaster ride. For all the good about my QNAP TS-212 NAS, I have certainly realized it is certainly NOT 'consumer friendly'. You can still do a lot of damage without any warning.

Thanks to all that have contributed to this thread.

Fortunately, there is now a version of Photorec for Marvel processors. Download "Marvell 88F628x Linux 2.6.32 Synology DS111, DS211, DS212+ NAS" from the first link posted : http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download

I also needed to recover files from our QNAP 419 which is an ARM NAS. I may have been doing it the long way around, as I am not 100% familiar with a lot of the steps. I had to do the following :

a) create a GPARTLIVE boot CD disk to be able to format a 1TB drive to use as my recover disk with EXT4 format.
b) After that I had to install software to be able to copy the photorec marvel version mentioned on the EXT4 disk using my windows machine. The one that I used is the following one : http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2fsd/

From there, the steps from the original post works well. BTW, to unzip the .bz2 downloaded file, the command is tar -xvjpf filename.tar.bz2

It is now running at this moment and says that it will take 12 hours to complete. I hope it recovers the important files that I am after!

I just wanted to thank this post. It worked. At least I could recover thousands of anonymous files that in time will be correctly renamed.

I think you could also provide this service under Teamviewer and run the Linux in a Virtual OS environment. I would gladly pay for someone to handle this problem for me if I needed it.

I know this a long shot but here goes.

I have followed this thread with success and recovered some .mov files I had accidently deleted.
However, when I try to play them i get the following quicktime error,

"The document “f3378764624_ftyp.mov” could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands."

The files seem to have the correct file size and extension but they just wont play.

Anyone had success recovering .mov files with photorec?

Thanks.

Sorry, I haven't tried .MOV myself. I did restore .mp3 / .mp4 / .m4v and .wmv files no problem.

Cheers

My Terabyte RAID 1 Volume was formatted when I upgraded firmware. The volume was created using a 1 TB and 1.5 TB drive. I connected a third external 500 GB drive which had two partitions to perform the uninstall.. Which volume below do I point photorec to for the recovery?? I am thinking md0 but want to make sure. If this works I will b so ** happy.. I lost a bit of history with this debacle!
Thanks!

Yes, MD0 is the volume you want.

Good luck!

Note: Unfortunately your filenames and directory names will NOT be restored. I would install and use an indexing and search engine on your PC and use that to index files and contents of files- this helped me recover the files I was looking for.

What kind of software ? Do you know a name ?

Let me just start by saying....

Thank you, thank you, thank you :)

Even though this entry is a bit old, it still pop up on my google search and saved my life.

Sparre wrote:Hi....

I have tried the suggested procedure on my QNAP 209-II Pro after accidentially deleting a share (pointing towards my music-folder on the NAS).

When I try to execute the photorec_static (/share/USBDisk1/linux/photorec_static) it responds 'Cannot execute binary file'.

There is full access on all files (777) and I have set the permissions for the USBDisk1 (admin rights).

Tried the kernel 2.6.x i386/x86_64 and kernel 2.4.x i386/x86_64 and the i386 RPM .... just to be sure ;-)

Optware ipkg is installed and functional,,,,

Any suggestions ?

Thanks in advance....

I know the "QNAP 209-II" post is a bit old, but I just recovered a lot of files on my QNAP-209 II Pro, and I too started with the "Cannot execute binary file" error, but now it seems that TESTDISK/PHOTOREC created a "Marvell 88F628x Linux 2.6.32 Synology DS111, DS211, DS212+ NAS" version, and that ran perfectly on my 209 NAS.
