I do not see any firmware updates for these drives on their site.

I'm worried now - I've just installed a brand new TS-412 with 2 x ST3000DM001 set up as RAID 1. I haven't even finished copying all my stuff onto it from my old NAS and I find this thread suggesting my shiny new kit will bust in about a week!

Has anyone had problems with this hardware combination using RAID 1? I notice the drives are still on the compatibility list for TS-412.

Did you upgrade the nas firmware and the drive firmware?

This thread essentially says you should update the HDD and the NAS firmware...

I've got the most recent QNAP TS-412 firmware available (3.6.1 Build 0302T) but I haven't upgraded the HD firmware. I tried to do this but when I got as far as actually clicking the 'Proceed' button on the Seagate installation software, there was a message saying NOT to run it on RAID system drives. As I've configured my drives for RAID 1, I was forced to cancel the operation and contact Seagate (via e-mail as the phone service was finished for day at 4:00pm) to see whether they were making a distinction between desktop RAID system drives and drives that are configured for RAID in NAS systems. The response this morning is:-

Thank you for contacting Seagate technical support.

Every firmware update on every form of interface has the risk of causing damage to the hard drive. Since you have a raid 1 configuration, take one hard drive out and update it when it is internally connected in a PC then place it back in the NAS, and see if Raid 1 is complete and working then do the same on the other drive.

Don't hesitate to contact us if you have other questions.

So basically, it might not work and it might screw your drive but we suggest you try it anyway.

I don't think I will.

First 3.6.1 is not the current firmware, 3.7.1 is. This is the version you need to upgrade to along with upgrading the firmware on the drives for them to function properly in the NAS. If you don't you will probably have problems.

Any upgrade has the potential to destroy data. That is why QNAP and Seagate both recommend having a full backup before doing any upgrade. You have a raid array. If you update the drive firmware and the data gets destroyed the disk will be rebuilt by the NAS when you reinsert in tn the NAS. That is why you only do one drive at a time.

The choice is yours. Update to ovoid problems or don't and wait for the stuff to hit the fan down the road.

Ok, thanks for that. I took your advice and updated one of my two drives to firmware CC4H on Friday. Everything is cool so far, although I do think there is still too much activity on both drives when nothing much should be going on. I don't think the green HDD lights have stopped flashing since I first switched the NAS on about 10 days ago (but now they flash slightly out of sync). The RAID synchronization has long since finished but I've yet to sort out precisely how much work is being done by the various BT, backup and UPnP applications - I probably should have bedded the NAS in before setting those up.

Hello,

in case of Seagate:
ST3000DM001 9YN166 3TB
ST2500DM001 9YN16L 2.5TB
ST2000DM001 9YN164 2TB
ST1000DM003 9YN162 1TB

http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/223651en

I had to first update the firmware of the qnap nas, to see the hdd at all. then initialized and used the seagate hdd for some time, and then somehow after one restart there were problems...... for few months didnt solve it, and then... I updated the firmware of hdd!

I had ST3000DM001 with the firmware of CC4C and updated it to CC4H. So for now it resumed to work.
If I have to guess, this update can solve problems for many users, if it solved for you too, please respond about it.

Hello,

I did the same. I upgraded all my four disks to CC4H and... Same problem. I don't know what to do right now.

Is the NAS firmware 3.7.1?
No, RAID has never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups you will eventually lose data!

Hi all,

Since i'm not a rocket scientist, hence almost impossible to determine which drive you could safely buy to your NAS to avoid trouble, I thought I could get some expertize input here :)

I've been looking for a good drive to use with my NAS (TS-219P) and had almost decided to go with ST2000DM001 until I found this thread... My question is, are all the issues reported here related to RAID environments? Since i'm only interested in running jbod setup, are the issues discussed in this thread relevant for my setup?

There really should be a better support from Qnap, helping us "stupid" beginners to find a supported drive to use. A compability list with hundreds of drives and > 15 "notes" to take into account makes it virtually impossible to make a "wise" choice...

Thanks,
D

All disk models can fail prematurely (that's the reason we have warranties) and all disks will fail eventually (that's one of the reasons we always need backups of all important data).
I've been looking for a good drive to use with my NAS (TS-219P) and had almost decided to go with ST2000DM001 until I found this thread...
Well the most important message in this thread is that these disks should now be compatible, if they are updated with the latest firmware supplied by Seagate (must be done in a PC) and the NAS is updated to the 3.7.1 firmware.
My question is, are all the issues reported here related to RAID environments? Since i'm only interested in running jbod setup, are the issues discussed in this thread relevant for my setup?
I don't have any personal experience but I find it very hard to believe that the issues should be limited to RAID-configurations.

It may look like the problem is limited to RAID-configurations because the large majority use that with larger disks, like the one discussed in this thread. Also only with a redundant RAID-configuration is it possible to realize that the problems discussed here was what really happened and recover from such disk failure.
There really should be a better support from Qnap, helping us "stupid" beginners to find a supported drive to use.
It would be very dangerous for Qnap to make specific recommendations as to which disks to buy. The idea with a NAS is that you should be able to use different disks (within compatibility limits of course).

The forum is an excellent place to find buying recommendations.

Hitachi (you could look at HDS723020BLA642 for example) seems to generally have the least complaints form users here in the forum but all Seagate disks that can be found on the compatibility list (except of course the currently non-recommended ST2000DL003) should be okay. Avoid all WD desktop disks.

Enterprise disks from any manufacturer is preferable if you can afford them but they are much more expensive than desktop disks.

1. Decide on which disks on the market fit your storage capacity requirements and wallet.
2. Forget those that can't be found on the compatibility list.
3. Search the forum for other customer experiences (like it seems you did).
A compability list with hundreds of drives and > 15 "notes" to take into account makes it virtually impossible to make a "wise" choice...
Only a handful of the disks are marketed at the moment (but of course also older models have to be kept to have a complete list). The list is a compatibility list, not a buyers guide.
