Maybe with an eSATA dock but at least with USB there are many examples of incompatible products. The mentioned product is also a USB-dock so compatibility does matter.
Personally I use a combined eSATA/USB 2.0 external enclosure:
Icy Dock MB559US-1S, on
the Qnap compatibility list under the name of Cremax.
I also use a
Icy box IB-110StU3-B USB 3.0 dock, not on the compatibility list but it also works.

No, RAID has never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups you will eventually lose data!
