Remote Replication Help Please with Directories

Postby Budgie » Fri Jun 08, 2012 12:14 am

I have just acquired TS 559 Pro II and I am trying to use it as backup my Multimedia files help on TS 209 Pro II.
Because of the volume of data I am trying to get a test backup to work with only one subdirectory and file first.

I have ticked both boxes on the BackupServer on the TS 559 ie. Enable backup from a remote server to the local host
and Allow remote Rsync server to back up data to NAS so that it can receive data from the TS 209.

On the TS 209 Remote Replication I have tried to set up a job to copy one subdirectory (Ian_Hislop) containing one video file (Ian_Hislop_Blah.mp4) from /Qmultimedia/Videos/Ian_Hislop/Ian_Hislop_Blah.mp4. The Remote Test Hosting button says the test is a success and I have completed the Local Source Path (Network share/directory) with Qmultimedia for share and Videos/Ian_Hislop for directory.

When I apply this however the mp4 file is copied directly to the Multimedia/Videos directory. In other words the Video subdirectory "Ian_Hislop" is not copied. I have tried with and without trailing backslash after the subdirectory but always get the same result.

Please could somebody tell me where I am going wrong?

You are telling it to backup everything in directory Ian_Hislop which it is doing. If you want it in a specific directory on the destination then create Ian_Hislop on the destination and point to it.

Hi Don and thanks for the reply.
What I wanted to do was tell it to back up the Ian_Hislop directory and contents.
Will continue to search the links you have provided but what you suggest would be impracticable for all my Video Directories. Eventually I want to back up the whole lot but am trying to understand system first by using small example.
Thanks again,
Budgie

Hi Don, I didn't realize the excellent reference works to which you referred were by you. I do of course already have them, some in printed form.

I gave up on my single directory test and tried backing up the whole Qmultimedia/Videos directory and that is working but is taking an age. Both NAS have Gigabit NICs with fixed IPs on same sub net and are connected through a Gigabit switch on our lan. I ran the backup last night and it is still in progress this morning. There is only about 300 GB to backup so does that seem OK or is there something wrong with my setup?

Will search as you advised but grateful for any typical benchmark figures for reassurance.

Budgie

I'm afraid you are probably maxing out the CPU on the 209. It's a rather slow nas.

Hi Don,
Left job running while away for a week and it seems to have finished OK. That leaves me with two questions, the first is why was the directory not created with rsync in my simple test above?

Second question: how do I remote replictate the whole of the QMultimedia directory from the 209 to the 559? In setting up the job using the Remote Replication form there are two boxes for the source and destination paths with a slash in between for directory and subdirectory. If I set source as just QMultimedia from the drop down menu in the first source box, do I leave the second box empty or put a * in it or what in order to make the whole of QMultimedia directory and all three subdirectories (Music, Photos & Videos) the source?
I ask because trial and error will take weeks given the volume of data if I get first attempt wrong.

Regards,
Budgie.

OK Don,
I guess you are busy so I tried a new option without further help. No joy so how can I kill an rsync process so I may try another?

If you are using the gui I beleive there is an option to stop the job. Not sure if that option is available on the 209 firmware.

If you want to backup all of qmultimedia you just point to qmultimedia and it will backup everything in it to whatever destination folder you specify.

Hi Don,
Thanks again. Getting there now. I ended up restarting NAS box as I couldn't find a kill button. I have succeeded in backing up the whole QMultiMedia directory as intended. Took all the time since my last post. Still have one query and that is what is the difference in process between selecting NAS or Rsync Server in server type? Both work when backing up to TS559. Is it that one uses NFS and the other rsyncd?
Thanks again for the steady guidance.

Budgie

You would select Rsync Server if you wanted to have a non QNAP NAS device backup to the NAS.

NFS is not used. Both use rsync.

OK Don,
If they both use rsync what is the difference in the underlying process please? What is so special about the Qnap device that requires a different command.

Hi Don,
That's OK but if you don't know what chance do I have?. How do I get the question to the Qnap helpdesk for an answer I wonder.
Thanks again.
