Share internet connection to QNAP

Postby dulcifium » Thu Jun 28, 2012 10:20 pm

My PC has a wireless internet connection. For the purposes of this question, it's impossible to connection to a router/switch with internet - only the PC can have it. Is there any way to share this internet connection with a directly connected QNAP over ethernet so the QNAP can see the web?

Tell us more about your Internet connection, the PC hard- and software installed to gain access to the Internet.

Using PPTP or PPPoE connection to a DSL modem for example?
Using a 3/3.5/4G Internet connection?

It's a wifi connection but it's configured so I couldn't just pick it up with a dd-wrt router and bridge connections (for example).

Let me see if I have this correct. You PC is connected to the internet but nothing else is and you want other devices (NAS) that are connected to your PC to access the internet through your PC. If that is correct and your PC is windows then you need to enable internet sharing in windows. Your PC will then act as a router.

Is it just called "internet sharing"? And will it work with the NAS? If so, can I just google some tutorials?

Thanks,

It's called that or something similar. It should work with any device and Google is your friend.

I'm curious about your setup. I see that you are playing with Internet Connection Sharing which strikes me as very inefficient solution for you. I would have expected you to attempt a Wireless Bridge arrangement, if indeed the only available Internet connection for your network segment is via WiFi.

Wireless Bridge:
Image

A Wireless Bridge arrangement would let you connect devices within "your network" by wired connections at the Bridge, which would maximize the speed of your equipment within your network segment. You could even add a Wireless Access Point to provide WiFi from your equipement to the AP, which is in turn "wired" to your bridge. As long as the Wireless Bridge, and the Wireless AP are using different WiFi channels this would provide the best possible throughput on your entire segment. Obviously the Bridge connection to the real internet connection would be a bottleneck, but performance between equipment within your "bridged" segment would still fast, including the access between your PC and your NAS.

References:

If you existing Internet Connection Sharing is working for you, then perhaps you'd prefer to leave it well enough alone, but if you are looking for possibilities for your future network expansion within your network segment, a Wireless Bridge arrangement may be a better choice for you. While I admit that a Wireless Bridge would involve spending money for additional hardware, I believe you would find the extra functionality would make the investment worth the trouble.

There is no need to buy expensive WiFi Bridges, WiFi Range Extenders, or WiFi Access Points. Many consumer-grade routers can be configured, or flashed with 3rd Party Router firmware like OpenWRT, Tomato, or DD-WRT to provide this functionality. If you can find reasonable prices on compatible equipment this might be a solution for you in the future.

Unfortunately that's not an option and even if it were, my router (D-Link DIR-615 R4 running dd-wrt) can't work as a bridge :(

DD-WRT's Client bridge works in DD-WRT (build 14896) on the D-Link DIR-615. :D
See DD-WRT Wiki article: Client Bridged for setup assistance.

(I have DD-WRT installed on: ASUS RT-N16, Netgear WNDR3700, Linksys WRT160N, D-Link DIR825, D-Link DIR615-C1, and Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH -- I use the ASUS as my main router, and all the others are either Wireless-AP's or Wireless-CB's).

You also might want to consider investing in a Gigabit switch. Your computer and your NAS probably both support Gigabit connections, but your D-Link DIR 615 only has a 10/100 MB/s switch internally.

Patrick.

No, it doesn't work. I have tested it and I get the error that other people have - every time I reboot the router, the LAN ports break and the only way to fix it is to do a reset and put in all the settings again which gets tiresome pretty quickly. Also, it runs incredibly slow for some reason on my set-up.

Getting a gigabit router is exactly what I want to do but I can't find any cheap gigabit routers that support dd-wrt :(

Now I?m even more curious - when your PC is connectig direct to the Internet, what for is the router then?

I don't know ... there are routers available in the market, which can work with a wireless ISP... ok, you need a WLAN access point in case of you need a local WLAN, too.

I wanted the router to use as a bridge but it turns out it can't do that. So now I'm not using it.

No, RAID has never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups you will eventually lose data!

Thanks. £100 is very pricey (10x the 100Mb equivalent) but if it can do wireless bridge I might be able to make it work.
