Installing Qnap as file server.

Postby rxmap » Thu Jul 05, 2012 12:30 pm

We are an Exploration Mapping / Spatial / Cartographic company that has a hybrid server infrastucture here that has grown over several years to a pont where we need rationalisation.
Our file server is a Linux / Samba that also acts as the PDC and has several unmatched file share hdd's of varying sizes (non raid). We have two other servers that are Win 2003 and Win 2008 respectively that we use as VM boxes to handle SQL and WEB hosted mapping products. We also host two other servers here for Overseas mining exploration companies on which we manage their assay and drilling databases.
Our main in house concern is to replace our current file server with a Qnap box of some description and then to transfer the PDC from the Linux box to a Win Server box but that is not urgent.
I was considering a TS-459 Pro 11 or a TS-469 Pro as a file server for our office. We have 7 users, Cartograpers, Geologists and Spatial Analysts undertaking fairly intensive Map production and resource modelling.
The data generated is not massive but has grown over the years so our total data sets at the moment total 1.8 Tb Plus a backup drive of 1.5 Tb which acts as an onside backup archive that is replicated off site.
So my question is?
Which Qnap box will do?
Any assistance will be appreciated

Its very difficult to tell you what's suitable for you without understanding better your usage, workload, I/O profile & active data working set you plan to put on the array.

My advice would be to gather stats on your existing file server to understand how hard you push it. For example, with Windows you can use Perfmon to create an I/O profile.

That said based on what you've outlined above, either box should suffice if its just going to be a file server for 7 users and not used to host LUNs, databases or any I/O intensive workload. The x69's don't have a massive uplift in perceivable performance over the x59s Pro+/II in my opinion.
