RAID5 with N-2 HDD...?

Post by tomaceli »

Hi All!

Here is a big problem for me, critical data for sure...

I originally configured my RAID5 with 5 HDD as I was still waiting for the sixth one in replacement of a defective first shipment (slot 3).
Was urgently needed space...

Once received the 6th HDD, I launched the RAID expansion capacity but one of the original HDD failed during the process (slot 5, a few bad blocks).
As for that it created a read/write error on the new HDD (slot 3) and slot 5 is now marked as normal SMART status (orange).
btw total space is still 10.8 To...?

I tried a lot of things already but all tried rebuilds processed finish to fail as above at 93.5% of rebuilding.
Error [RAID 5 Disk Volume: Drive 1 2 4 5 6 3] Error occurred while accessing Drive 5.

Currently shown as:
- "In degraded mode Read only, Failed Drive(s): 5"
[RAID 5 Disk Volume: Drive 1 2 4 5 6 3]

--> If I pull out the drive 5 I can launch a recover but what could be the result...? And should I keep the drive 3 in his slot..?

Any ideas/comments would be great!
Thanks in advance for your support ;)

Check the Kernel messages for issues with the HDD #5 (/dev/sde) - use ie. # dmesg or # tail -200 /mnt/HDA_ROOT/.logs/kmsg

COntact QNAP customer support organisatioon please - be aware, this is pure community here, no formal support.

Re: RAID5 with N-2 HDD...?

Post by tomaceli »

Hi again,

Just to inform you, months later.., I've finally been able to backup my 6TB data.
Then I changed the #5 HDD for a new one, pulled in the new #3 HDD then powered on my QNAP.

The RAID 5 volume was down, for sure.
I tried to launch a recovery but it failed immediately.

So on, I created a new whole RAID 5 volume with all 6 HDD.
It's currenty at ~20% synchronizing @20Mb/s (will take around 35 hours...)

BITMAP will be enabled and then I'll copy back my data.
