WD40EFRX - LoadCycleCount issue is back?!

Post by TheRooster2000 »

Hi all!

In the German QNAP forum over here someone opened a thread about the new WD Red WD40EFRX HDDs.

In post 10 [click] and post 27 [click] one user decribes that the LoadCycleCount issue is back!! The LoadCycleCounter is rapidly increasing to extremely high values as it was known from former HDD generations. I remember that many users reported this especially for older WD Green HDDs with older firmware versions.

Can anyone here confirm this for the brand new WD40EFRX??
Would be absolutely unbelievable if this is really true :shock:

I recently bought three WD40EFRX which should replace the "Green" drives in one of my TS-869 devices. Now I'm not shure anymore if I should really do this... :S

Help!

All these issues reported are on devices not running the latest OS. Even so the Problem is reported with fw 3.7.2.

I will have two units equipped with it within next week, so I might be able to check then.

Okay, your feedback would be welcome!

I have running eight WD30EFRX @ Raid 5 in my TS-869 Pro with FW 3.7.3 and there is absolutely no issue with the LoadCycleCount. So I hope that the LoadCycleCount issue cannot be confirmed for the WD40EFRX.

Can you provide more information about the WD30EFRX drives. Do they have the NASware 2.0 fw already (what I have seen some newer models can have it, correct my if I am wrong).

So it would be good to collet the following information
- QNAP device
- fw running
- HDD model
- fw of hdd

No. No NASware 2.0 on my WD30EFRX REDs because they are from January this year. NASware 2.0 was just introduced with the new generation of RED drives a few weeks ago.

Nothing easier than that:

- QNAP device => TS-869 Pro
- fw running => FW 3.7.3
- HDD model => WDC WD30EFRX-68AX9N080.0
- fw of hdd => 80.00A80

For more information see my signature below.

Any news on this?

Thanks.

Unless these issue reports, I will use a small backup device for testing what I will reach Monday. It will take a few days until the disks have been replaced and the RAID has been restored.

I guess it will not before end of next week from my side.

Sorry for the delay.

No problem at all. Thanks anyway for your help!
I will recieve the next bunch of WD40EFRXs for my TS-869 Pro during the next few days. I hope that the LoadCycleCount issue does not affect the functionality of the combination of TS-869 + WD40EFRX in a negative way... :S

Did anybody else notice the mentioned issue?

**.

I see about 10 load-unload cycles/hour with the WD40EFRX drives in RAID 1 configuration on a small device TS-259 Pro+/QTS 4.0.2 when the device is idle.

Drives are
Type: WD40EFRX-68WT0N0
Firmware: 80.00A80
Build date: 27.08.2013 and 05.09.2013

I will open a ticket with WD support tomorrow.

Okay, cool. I appreciate that!

Maybe this is somehow related to issues that some users report here. QNAP seems to be aware of that and released a new beta 4.0.5 here. But unfortunately the beta did not seem to help [click!] :'

Logged a ticket with WD already.

No sure if this is related.
Also I'm running a TS-259 Pro+ what cant use the SMB fw.

I'll wait until WD reply and think about upgrading the other devices. Currently have a bunch of RED disk that cant be used.

Same here. Six WD40EFRX Reds here on hold for my 869 Pro...

Please keep us informed about WD's response to this!
I hope they soon will release a firmware upgrade for the WD40EFRX reds :S

Yepp I will. Guess it will be mid of next week for them to come back.

Did you try to replace one disk on your 869?

No, I didn't replace one yet. I'll keep all my six WD40EFRX Reds in their original wrapping for now. So I could potentially return them to the vendor if they can't be used in my QNAP :S

Hi johnripper,

did you already receive a reply from WD?

Just to keep you all informed:
Another user in the German forum has the same issue with his WD40EFRX Reds. His drives show about 50.000 LCCs within only 250 hours! Those drives are killing themselves in a NAS system with Linux OS...!! :shock:

I hope WD will release a fixed firmware for those drives ASAP. Otherwise the WD40EFRX Reds are unusable! Weird!
