Enabling HTTPS cannot open certain app webpages

Post by Earendil »

This issue has come up for a number of Qnap apps and their webpage access to them. Typically you click on the running app in the Qnap NAS admin screen. Another browser tab starts up and the webpage for that app attempts to open. Instead you get a "Secure Connection Failed" webpage and in Firefox at least, no "Advanced" button to add this website's exception to the browser. I believe that's because even though the URL has an "https:" in it, there is no certificate actually delivered.

My problem started when when I installed and started Plex. If you click on the Qnap app Plex icon where it says "Open", it opens another browser tab and the config screen should come up. Well instead I get the dreaded "Secure Connection Failed" webpage and no "Advanced" button to accept the webpage as "good". Searching for hours found some suggestions but nothing worked for me although the comments were pointing me to a Qnap HTTPS issue.

I got around this and into the Plex config by removing the "s" from "https:" in the Plex' webpage URL but I thought that is annoying, there had to be a better way. I played around with the Qnap settings and I found something. My original settings under Control Panel > System > General Settings > System Administration had "Enable secure connection (HTTPS)" enabled and "Force secure connection (HTTPS) only" enabled as well. Safety first, right? Only when I DISABLE both, THEN trying to bring up the Plex config webpage resulted in a URL WITHOUT the "s", only "http:" and it worked. Note: If you disable the "Enable secure connection (HTTPS)" option you must use "http:" instead of "https:" to access your Qnap NAS admin screen!

So since I do not wish to access the Qnap NAS without "https:", I will need to remember to remove the unused "s" in the "https:" of the Plex config screen the Qnap Plex app attempts to send me to. Qnap should either supply the certificate (if that's the actual problem) or make the Qnap app URL's correctly. Please. 8)

Hi,

"Certain Web pages" does translate to Plex in your use case. All we can argue is that QNAP does use http resp. https as currently in use when connecting to NAS:32400/web/ - and Plex does only listen for http. That's all. Plex is built and provided by Plex, not by QNAP.

Plex does not support https for the local Plex Web access. You might consider using the Hosted access from the plex.tv site instead. Here what Plex says: Opening Plex Web App:
You can access the Plex Web App via two main methods:
- Hosted from the plex.tv website
- Locally through your Plex Media Server

Both methods can provide you with the same basic web app.

Tip!: We recommend using the "hosted" web app, since that ensures you're always using the latest version with the newest features and fixes. The app runs locally in your browser and can make local connections to your server.

Hosted Plex Web App
You can access the Plex Web App from wherever you are by making use of the version hosted on the plex.tv website. To use it:
Open a browser window
Visit https://plex.tv/web
...
That's all.

So I guess that makes sense, certainly can't fault Qnap for allowing HTTPS but I can fault for Plex not going the same route. Thanks for the clarification.

To Plex: As for Plex using their hosted site versus the local site, no way. Why would I want to have Plex (or anyone I don't trust) see my data? I'll modify the Plex URL for the local server and go that route.

Check the Plex Web site for more details. Even if calling the hosted site, the communication is established locally from the Web browser direct to your server.
