My TS-453bMini only boots when HDMI is plugged in

Upgraded to TS-453Bmini yesterday after six years with 259pro.

Had difficulty getting the cloud install to work, so since it had HDMI out, i plugged it into a monitor, and then i got it to work eventually.

Now it has installed, upgraded and rebuild my raid10 and all works fine, except for one major thing:

For some reason, if i restart the machine, it won't come back up unless i start it with HDMI plugged in!

With no HDMI, it beeps once, then just stops, all lights solid green.

With HDMI, i see the "booting kernel" message, and after a while i get the "Install HDStation" prompt, at which point all works fine, i can SSH and Browse into the machine etc.


I am not sure how to configure the QNAP so that it can start headless. Pointers much appreciated!

What happens if you boot it with HDMI disconnected, wait 10 minutes, then connect HDMI? Is anything shown?

Do you have your QNAP HDMI plugged in directly to the TV or a Receiver?

I had an issue on my x73 box where if I had a HDMI setting on my receiver a certain way, I ran into the same issue.

1. I already tried waiting for a while. If i then plug the HDMI, nothing is visible nor happens. I have to have HDMI plugged in "from the start".
2. I have it plugged in to my computer monitor.

this must be some issue/setting with my Qnap i'd say, but not sure how to fix it.

OK, so as per mails w support i have tried:

1. power off, take out harddrives
2. boot up (had to do via hdmi, since it wont boot up otherwise)
3. plug drives back in, get into web interface
4. reset factory settings

After this, i get "factory reset complete click here to go to admin page" but when i click on that, i get "server cant be found" and it can't be found by qfinder...

If i then turn power off, plug in HDMI, i get "kernel booting up" and after 2 mins the server is up!


Not sure what to do.

I would ask support if there is a bios update for your model. That really is the only thing in play prior to starting QTS off of the DOM.

maybe the bios has a setting to not boot on "error" .. I know some computers don't boot if you have no keyboard connected (but most have a setting not to "stop" on POST errors)

That's weird! If you uninstall HDstation does it boot without HDMI?

how has this story ended?

I ask, because my brother bought 3 weeks ago a TS-453B and had now this situation that the qnap boots only completly when a monitor is connected to hdmi out.
