I was able to solve this problem by deleting all email accounts in notification center. I then created a rule and specified "custom" (not outlook.com).

For the server use "smtp.office365.com"
Be sure to select "TLS" encryption using port 587.

Enter the Office365 email address for username and email address fields.

Finish out the wizard.

It appears that adding the account from the "new rule" wizard does something differently from just adding the account directly.
For me, this doesn't work.
This situation is really frustrating. It's amazing that these new firmware create so many problems.
Qnap is completely losing my confidence.

It works for me too. I had to use TLS instead SSL.
