[SOLVED] Help - No Hard drive detected AFTER firmware update

Post by spyrou »

Dear all,

I have a QNAP TS-253Be, for nearly 3 years. I regularly do my system upgrades (monthly?).
This morning i upgraded from 4.5.4.1741 to 4.5.4.1787.
But now the Web prompt tells me: Welcome to the QTS Smart Installation system!
Then when I start the Smart Installation, a popup appears to say: "Hard Drive Missing" or "Admin credentials are incorrect"

Can you please help ?
Cheers

Steps I have made:
  • Connect on my NAS, on the Web interface, got the Firmware update popup
  • Chose to restart the NAS
  • After the NAS restarted successfully, Connect on my NAS, on the Web interface, got the Firmware update popup
  • Chose to do the Firmware upgrade
  • Then after the Firmware upgraded successfully, I restarted the NAS before the countdown went to 0.
  • Now:
  • when I connect Connect on my NAS, on the Web interface, with the NAS name : the web page displays a 404 "We can’t connect to the server"
  • when I connect Connect on my NAS, on the Web interface, with the IP address : the web page displays a Smart Installation, and a popup appears to say: "Hard Drive Missing", see attachment:
    NAS_1_IP_2021-09-16_10-39-12.png
  • If I connect through my Android , with Qmanager, and my admin credentials, I get : "Failed to connect : You login credentials are incorrect or your account is no longer valid"
Edit: SOLVED
All, I managed to solve the issue, by doing the following:
  1. Force shutdown , by removing the Power cable. (as the power button became useless for some reasons)
  2. Remove all hard drives, and restart the NAS empty
  3. Shutdown the NAS, install hard drive 1, reboot (NAS is now complaining about a missing / known hard drive : Good news)
  4. Shutdown the NAS, install hard drive 2, reboot: All good

I would contact QNAP Support on this issue. it is not normal and QNAP need to investigate why your NAS has acted like this from an upgrade of firmware.

Thanks both for taking the time to answer. I just edited my first post to provide my solution, in case it happens to someone else.
PS: I have not bothered to contact QNAP support. But I do agree , they should be aware of it.

I have the exact same issue.

Does it means that I just lost everything on my NAS and that I have to start from scatch?

I too have an almost same problem.
For me I get:
1. Start smart installation
2. Specify firmware version / current version / 4.5.4.1787
3. Message box: Hard drive missing: Install and format at least one hard drive before using the NAS. A hard drive can be inserted to an empty disk bay without turning off the NAS. For the hard disk compatibility list, please visit https://www.qnap.com/compatibility/

Now what?
I have the 4 drive TS 453be

I have the same issue with TS-653B. After upgrading to the QTS 4.5.4.1787 it says:

"Welcome to the QTS Smart Installation system!
Start Smart Installation"

This is what QNAP replied to my ticket:

Shutdown the NAS and release all the disks.

Power on the NAS without a disk.

Try login in the NAS as admin in the SSH environment:
https://www.qnap.com/en/how-to/knowledg ... as-by-ssh/

Execute below command and let me know the result.
1. df -h

Then insert all the disk one at a time. (Ensure the inserted disk HDD LED is green before inserting the next disk.)
Then in the SSH, execute below command:
2. qcli_storage -d
3. md_checker
4. dhead /etc/config/uLinux.conf

This command should be:

Code: Select all

head /etc/config/uLinux.conf

I wasn't able to login in the SSH when my NAS was empty, my login credentials didn't work. I could login in the NAS first after puting in first disk.

without disks, login for admin is probably default (first MAC?)
