QNAP TS259 Pro+ single hard drive degrading

Post by smallspark »

I have TS259 pro+, it has two bay but I only have one hard drive, there is no hard drive in bay 2. The hard drive is degrading, after doing some research it looks like I need to replace the hard drive. How do I do this the correct way, can I put a hard drive in second bay and mirror the existing hard drive? All the tutorials I found had 2 hard drives, I couldn't find anything for 1 hard drive.

It's too late now for that..the RAID redundancy should have been build before the drive went bad

Remove the drive and start the NAS from scratch (2 drives in RAID1 this time) ..

What happens if I insert a drive in the 2nd bay?

it will be a drive in the second bay

you cannot create a raid1 with a degraded drive

don't tell me you have no backups (what was the plan here with a single drive?)

I inherited the nas1, I have no idea if there is a back up or why there was only a single drive. Can I take a backup and go from there? What are my options? Is it possible to get data from the drive and bring it over to the new drive?

If the data is of any value do an external backup asap .. a USB drive wold work

after that is done, you can think of options

I was looking through the error logs and found this error: Error 2021/10/13 14:42:53 System 127.0.0.1 localhost Drive 2 unplugged.

It looks like there are two drivers, but one of them was unplugged on that date. If I plug Drive 2 back, can I hot swap Drive 1? I'm not sure why Drive 2 was unplugged

so the backup is done ?

a couple of screenshots of the disks management would help to understand what is going on

The backup is not done, I am not near the nas1 location, I will be there tomorrow.

So it says mirroring disk volume..that is a RAID1 ..so if the second disk is swapped (hot! while on) the rebuild should start

sidenote..hope you are accessing the NAS remotely via secure means (e g. VPN .no, that does not cost anything) and not via an exposed NAS unit

Yes, I am accessing NAS remotely via VPN. I will go in and switch the second drive and replace it (while on) with a new drive.
