Fried TS-251+ to 473A

Post by Pmont2782110 »

I posted about this as a troubleshooting issue in another thread (viewtopic.php?f=50&t=154750&start=15) where a few users had my exact problem. But it's a fairly buried post, so thought I'd ask in the Getting Started board as it's also, viewed from another angle, that sort of problem.

In short: came home from a trip to the in-laws to a 251+ that was blinking orange status, solid blue USB, and solid reds HDD. That, I can tell from the thread, can be several things, and not all of them mean the drives are dead. I should say, I'm a few months behind on backups, so... would like to keep what's on the drives, assuming the drives are toast. It's a RAID 0 set up.

I have a 4-bay device now, and, unsurprisingly, the various set up and migration guides don't have an option that involves jamming maybe dead drives from an old system into a new one... But maaaaaybe you can? :ashamed:

Or, put another way, is there any work around for users who, for whatever reason, have their HDDs but not the old box? Can you set up the device with a couple new drives and then add in 2 disks that are already populated? (I am fully cognizant that I may be too dumb and reckless to own and administer a NAS...)

Not expecting much here, just hoping there might be a way around rebuilding the Plex folder structure and reprocessing physical purchases for the last half of 2021. Any advice would be appreciated :)

The QNAP migration guide is pretty clear on the compatibility here

I thought this assumed a functional source drive.... But will give it a whirl. Thanks!

Your issue sounds like the clock bug.. that does not kill the drives, it just renders the LPC bus unusable (and everything attached to it)

A question regarding the migration... when I powered up I was greeted by a host of warnings and errors. Some of these seem to have been from the TS-251's death throes (fan failure, improper shut down, etc), whereas others... well, I'm not sure if I've screwed up in the migration (mixed up drives?) or if there's something correctable that went wrong when the NAS failed or if there's something fatal to the drives that happened when the NAS failed...

Two themes emerge:
1. RAID group 1 in Storage pool 1 (my only pool on the 251) is inaccessible
and, likely because of that,
2. My default shared folders, where the data I'm hoping is still accessible resides, are inaccessible, the system volume locked.

Both error and warning alerts are pictured below. I would be grateful is anyone could suggest next steps.

First, the message on the right says disks have failed, but the left system status has both 1 and 2 in green. So are they failed or not?

Second, below is the bit on the locked system volume and encryption key...

So not some default, self-protective thing that happens when the NAS dies but likely a malware / ransomware thing?

why was your NAS web exposed?

ransomware wouldn't kill the hardware (would be counterproductive to their cause on top) I still think it would be a hardware fault

Just followed the instructions for making my Plex accessible while stuck with family. Wanted to watch something better than Netflix, didn't realize it could lead to such dire consequences!

The drives are fine according to the Disk Health test, so doesn't seem the hardware fault is there.

Plex install won't lead to a hardware defect..

Did you contact QNAP?

Yes, I submitted a ticket last night when you advised I do (and thanks for the guidance here). Just going to leave things shutdown on the shelf until I hear back...
