QNAP SFP+ connection not working

Post by gusanchezf »

Hi folks,

I'm trying to set up a direct attach storage solution between a QNAP NAS and a the server in my office.

The hardware is:

· QNAP TS-451 (4.3.2 Build 20170217)
· HP DL380 Gen10 (network card: HPE Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331T Adapter)

Since the two Ethernet ports on the QNAP are already occupied, I intended to use the SFP+ 10GbE port on the QNAP.

I bought a QSFPTEK adapter "SFP 1000M RJ45 for Cisco" and the connection is as follows: QNAP SFP+ 10GbE port <-> QSFPTEK adapter <-> RJ45 Ethernet cable <-> HPE Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331T Adapter.

I've given IP's on the same subnet to both the QNAP port and the server's Ethernet interface. On both sides apparently there's physical link, and on the QNAP management interface I see a "green" link status.

Nevertheless, I can't ping the QNAP IP from the server. The communication is clearly not working between the two devices.

I've been doing some research, and I've concluded that maybe is not possible to connect an SFP+ 10GB port to a 1GB network card, any confirmation on this would be highly appreciated.

If that's the problem, what do you think guys is the cheapest/easiest way to accomplish the setup?

Many thanks in advance.

Take a look at below topic. Wasn't the exact same model but we couldn't get SFP to work even though it should.
I'm running 10G to 10G and it works but couldn't get 10G to 1G to work with just a transceiver change.
There's something preventing it. As you'll see on many post, I would open a ticket with qnap to raise this question. They don't look at the forum typically.
I'm not familiar with linux to do any real troubleshooting.

Thanks you very much for your response Dawson!

It is in fact a very similar situation. I've concluded that you were able to make it work with a supported transceiver + a 10Gb ubiquity switch.

Could you provide more details on the switch model? Also, how do you have connected the clients to the switch? It is possible to use 1Gb ethernet (so I can connect to my HPE Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331T Adapter) or the full stack has to be at 10GB?

No I couldn't get the 1G/SFP connection to work. It only worked 10GB to 10GB.
I don't think the qnap is picky with the transceiver. I've used ubiquity, cisco, & fiberstore generic.
Switches are expensive. I picked up XG16 ubiquity switch when it was in beta 3 years ago cheap. Now their $550 USD.
What I would do is find a 10GB nic adapter for your DL380 and try direct connecting. HP's are particular with their hardware so may need to be a used HP branded one.
That way you'll be able to test without buying a switch.

Yeah those are the two options I have in mind.
I'm aware the NIC would be cheaper but buying a switch perhaps is a better option to scale up if we add more servers in the future.
Anyway, many thanks for your input/guidance. Very much appreciated!

The Netgear MS510TX for $270 is probably the cheapest option.

Also look at Mikrotic. Seem to have some inexpensive options

HI Guys,Just went through the same issue on a brand new ts432 with 10Gb ports.

Gtek SFP= DAC cables from amazon.
Fortigate switch

Had to disable spanning tree and manually config the port on the switch to 10Gb full.
