QNAP TVS-872XT & QSW-M408-4C

Post by gjhorn »

I have a QNAP TVS-872XT which is on our basic infrastructure network - which is 1GbE. I picked up a QSW-M408-4C device to put the Mac clients on 10GbE instead of using the Thunderbolt 3 ports. My question is after putting the Mac's and the NAS on port's 9, 10, 11, and 12 for the 10GbE, would I be able to use the standard 1-8 1GbE port's for anything else? Like connecting our basic infrastructure subnet to it? Would this do anything for me? Could I take the Mac client's off the basic infrastructure subnet? Would the basic infrastructure subnet flow through the 10GbE ports?

I will attach a network diagram?

you connect the switch with one of the 1GbE ports to the rest of the network .. not each computer like in your drawing

it's even on the product page of that switch

Okay, great. Thanks. So I don't have to multi-home on the Mac's then? I would connect the Mac video stations to the 10GbE ports only. They would be able to connect to our infrastructure and servers on 1GbE and still work on the video files over 10GbE from the Nas. Is this correct?

After thinking it over some more, wouldn't the Mac network bog down trying to communicate to the infrastructure when working on a video file directly over the 10GbE network?

Thanks.

No ..why?

The 10GbE connections can talk to each other without the data leaving the 10GbE network .. that is how switches work. (Layer 2)
