How to set up Secure Login (Https)

Post by adamad »

I am unable to login using SSL / HTTPS on my home network or remotely. I can only use an unsecure connection to connect.
Does anyone have a link to basic SSL set up? I've never done it before so need step by step instructions, I have searched the forums and elsewhere.
All the forum topics talk about things I don't understand. (eg ports, certificates etc)

Do you mean the browser throws an error with the certificate or you cannot connect at all? Chrome throws an error as the certificate is not signed but allows you to connect anyway..

Once it's enabled, there is no special set-up to permit a http connection to the NAS.

Is this a newly installed (or re-installed) NAS?

Do you had changed any settings of the NAS away from the default - for QTS by http 8080/TCP, for QTS by https 443/TCP (as per the Control Panel - System - General) resp. the Web Server Service (Control Panel - Network Services - Web Server ... for hosting Web services, not for accessing QTS) by http 80/TCP res. for https 8081/TCP?

You might want to try to reset the certificate/private key - in the Control Panel go to System - Security - Certificate & Private Key - [Restore to Default].

I'm still having issues with this. I have reinitialised my whole system. So everything is back to default. I've also ensured the default certificate is being used.

What is the format of the https address??

Should it be the following?
https://xxx.xxx.x.xx:443/cgi-bin/

I've tried a few different variations and I always get a notification that the site is not secure and to login using an unsecured connection

using myqnapcloud service, you can setup the lets encrypt integrated into QTS.

letsencrypt HTTPS:// greenlock only works using myqnapcloud URL for your device. Not any other domain name from what the documentation says on the site FAQ.

Anyway i found that setting up https using letsencrypt with auto renewal using myqnapcloud was the easiest way to go about it.

you can verify your https cert as such in chrome(in addition to the https green lock sign in url)

Right. So this means when you are on the network using home wifi, a non-secure connection is ok.
When away from the internal network, and connected on public wifi, I would use the https: my qnap cloud link?
