Resonant buzzing

Post by Godrick »

I have a TVS-682T with 4 x 8Tb Reds.

I can put up with the fan noise, but what is really irritating is the buzzing / rattling of the plastic disc tray and front facia of the unit.

It is not constant and can sometimes be mitigate by pressing on the front or sides of the unit, but there is clearly a resonance that amplifies the buzz.

Is there any way of minimising it?

most likely one of the hard disk drives spinning is causing the resonating issue. the NAS/Drive bay just emphasize the sound.

you could try using a number of sound deadening materials under the NAS or in the Drive bay or see if you can dampen the drive bays slightly making the drives fit with some thin sound deadening material too.

I have the same problem with my TVS-882. It's where they're now using plastic quick release trays instead of the metal design from other models. To be honest, at the price point they sell these devices I expect drive trays with rubber washers/grommets to prevent any resonance and find the current designs very lacking for the price.
TS-439 Pro running Debian Stretch, TVS-882 running QTS.

I am kinda shocked ...
I have been dealing with a resonating front-cover (TS-253Be), and now also a resonating empty disk-tray.
Only thing that is "initiating" this, is a 4TB WD Red - which isn't vibrating any more than a normal nas-HDD vibrates (due to 5400rpm) - and the noise can be removed 100% by touching the front-lid (and I can feel no to slight vibrations, which is 100% normal for a operating HDD).

I DON'T have ANY ISSUES with an Asustor-NAS and a Syynology - with the SAME HDD !!!..
Still, Qnap and Qnap-disciples, writes, that the "solution lies in resolving the issue" with foam, rubber-pads, etc....

Instead of accepting the fact :
- these Qnap's (the B, Be models with thin loose plastic-front-covers) and other Qnap's with the "new" plastic-trays, are just not suited for the job !!
- which is the same as = the units and/or front-covers and/or disk-trays should be replaced, to something that sits-tight !!

My solution: Start making the consumer-NAS's as good as Asustor, NetGear, Synology etc - that is: Start making consumer-NAS's that work with standard NAS-HDD's such as WD Reds !!
