Replacing a failing hard drive
I have a TVS-682T. One of the 4 RAID 6 hard drives is indicating a SMART error (Current_Pending_Sector 16). I take this to mean that 16 sectors cannot be read. Both the long and the short disk tests show no errors.
The dashboard says that the drive is not in the best state. I have a replacement drive of the same type.
How do I go about replacing it?
The manual says:
Important: Do not install a new drive when the system is not in degraded mode [which it isn't], otherwise you may encounter unexpected system failures.
Should I just shut the QNAP down and replace the drive, or how swap it, eg?

Re: Replacing a failing hard drive
take the faulty drive out while running (it will beep indicating it is degraded) and then put the new drive in
all while running..do not shut it down

Re: Replacing a failing hard drive
theres a video guide in my FAQ url in my signature for replacing hard drive.
but in video tutorial for hdd replacement they said to go storage manager click the buttons before swap out in turns. what exactly is the difference between the 2 methods?
by the way i did this before in a 5 and 6 bay for raid5 and raid6.dolbyman wrote:take the faulty drive out while running (it will beep indicating it is degraded) and then put the new drive in

Thanks! I had not spotted that replace disk option.

Re: Replacing a failing hard drive
i guess the buttons would be useful if you cold swap the drives ...
maybe it would also stop you from replacing the wrong drive on degraded raid ?

Re: Replacing a failing hard drive
yeah that makes sense. i was wondering if doing it their way would mean faster rebuild, but maybe not.dolbyman wrote:i guess the buttons would be useful if you cold swap the drives ...

the hot swap worked fine for me, also less fiddling with qts, as long as it gets the same job done

Errr ... the reason that I asked the question was that the manual says that you shouldn't do that, unless the raid is degraded, which it isn't.

Re: Replacing a failing hard drive
taking the drive out while running, WILL degrade the raid (the beep)
it will NOT while shut down
it will NOT while shut down

Re: Replacing a failing hard drive
Hello!
I'm in a similar situation to this. My QNAP has started showing the Current_Pending_Sector SMART error.
So the drive hasn't failed, yet and the RAID5 is still in place. I'm only using 3 drives on RAID5.
I have an identical replacement disk, but instead of replacing the failing drive first, I'm thinking I should add the drive as a 4th disk and migrate from RAID5 to RAID6 -- then replace the faulty drive.
Does that sound okay, or does can anyone suggest what my next step should be?
Did the OP end up just end up pulling out the failing drive and doing a hot-swap?
Ben

Bad idea. Replaced the failing drive first.
Use the forum search feature before posting.
Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

Re: Replacing a failing hard drive
Hi Don,
I thought it would be better to have the RAID 5 redundancy in place while all the drives were still functioning and let the NAS built the additional redundancy I would get with RAID 6. Today I've read a lot of posts and articles about other drives failing during a RAID 5 rebuild and people losing everything.
EDIT: I'd rather not have to restore from a backup!

Re: Replacing a failing hard drive
Op just went to the menu for adding disks, which also allows them to be replaced, one at a time. Seemed to do the job. New disk rattles much less.

Re: Replacing a failing hard drive
I'm running 4.3 and I can't seem to find a menu to add/replace disk.
Where is it located?
Thanks

Re: Replacing a failing hard drive
On 4.3.3 it’s at Storage Mgr>Storage Space>Manage>Manage Dropdown
All discs are greyed out though when all services are running.
You can still replace a “Failing Drive” or even “Good Drive” by unplugging one of the drives - this will send Qnap to “Degraded Mode” once it is, just hot seap with the new drive.
I hope this is clearer to all readers. Thanks!

Re: Replacing a failing hard drive
Hi - a QNAP TVS-682T here: QNAP reported Host Drive 3 as having a controller issue. Was ready to update my backup of the files from the QNAP before replacing the bad drive and rebooted it. Now it reports Drive 3 as being OK. My instinct is to replace it anyway as all copying to the RAID (via Ethernet CAT 7) is now VERY slow. Any thoughts? Thanks!
