Trexx, thanks again for everything! I am setting stuff up and figuring out how it works by trial and error. I also found some other guides too so it's slowly seeping into the brain pan! Hopefully next time you hear from me I'll have progress!

You are welcome Darf. Good luck and remember. I have rebuilt my system a few times over years for various reasons. It will make sense the more you play/do.

Thanks- I have done a rebuild only once so far thanks to your help, and I think so far things have been for the most part pleasing. I still haven't quite figured out where you establish permissions on top-level QFile shares so that people other than Admin can actually see them, but I know it is not in the permissions as shown in QFile itself. Oh well- I'll figure it out. How hard can it be, right?

Anyway, I would like to report that over the weekend I got Plex Media Server set up nicely along with a few bonus items like presenting the PlexMediaServer file structure in QFile so I could easily transfer my media there (as Admin of course) and I finally got to enjoy watching an actual move served from my QNAP, and even using my venerable Roku 3 as the player, the performance was outstanding! There is literally less than a second to load the media when it took anywhere from 5 - infinity seconds to load films that were served on my mac mini. Replays take less than a second to jump back 10 seconds when the before very thought of using the Replay feature risked sending my movie into limbo! I feel like I am using a howitzer to kill a housefly, but its nice to see that it was able to do this while barely registering any load, making me confident that I will be able to throw a lot at this machine before it starts to complain.

I take you note about rebuilding to heart, so I am taking notes on all configuration so that I can easily rebuild without having figure out old problems.

There are 2 things to keep in mind.. WHO is seeing them (local user on QNAP, windows user, etc.) and HOW they are seeing them (Protocol/Method - On Box (ie. native apps), SMB, NFS, etc.).

WHO: http://docs.qnap.com/nas/4.3/cat2/en/share_folders.htm http://docs.qnap.com/nas/4.3/cat2/en/pr ... ttings.htm
HOW: http://docs.qnap.com/nas/4.3/cat2/en/win_mac_nfs.htm
