Apc battery backup odor

Post by bapw@comcast.net »

Is it normal for battery backups to give off a slight smell when first turned on.

From my experience with my new CyberPower UPS there was no smell beyond that new PC plastic smell which i love :) trying to remember if any in the past smelt but can't recall that far back now and I would think if they did smell I'd remember. New plastics will give off a smell for a week or two when you turn them on for the first time, this is normal, if after one month they still smell, well, not normal personally.

How old is the UPS? The smell could be from the initial battery charge. If the UPS is over one week old, the batteries should be 100% charged, therefore there should be no new battery charge ozone smell (which I have smelt before, even recently on standard AA batteries charging) Is the smell there when it is running on batteries with no power input? or is the smell there with power input?

Have you used the software to check on the UPS? Checked logs for anomalies? Can you describe the smell? Is it like acidic? electrical? electrical burning? rotten eggs? ozone?

Anything on APC site or forums about this?

What model is the APC UPS? the Australian site has support available, the same should be for your location.

The model is  br1500g. I cannot really describe the odor. Not like rotten eggs. Never used battery back so unsure if this is normal. Felt warm to the touch while on.

from here you can download the manual and software. I would install the software, connect and get all that working so you can go into the system and check it things such as the log, battery charge, capacity etc.

IT could just be that new smell from components that normally disappears. Keep an eye on the UPS, touch the case to feel for heat production etc.

oh yuck... my Yamaha amp still smells like that new component smell when it has been on for several hours pumping out the sound, I love it. Not that fishy smell like yours Dolby, thankfully.

Has there been a water leak recently? If any water has entered the battery cabinets it can cause some of the battery fuses to trip or cause batteries to overheat, and fail, giving off rotten egg smell gas.
