What are you quys using ?

Post by danny.bmw »

Hello,

I have a qnap tvs1282 with I7 and i’m only using plex on it.
What are you quys using on your qnap to get the most out of it.
Im just a simple home user.

What are some great apps or programs that make the experience even better of the qnap ?

Thanks !

Hi there,

You probably missed this thread which already is about the same thing

yes plex is incredibly useful for streaming your digital content from the NAS to your client devices and hdtv. I also use it sometimes, that and kodi. Emby does the exact thing plex does, i alternate between the 2.

But mostly i use the qnap as a multimedia streaming device. it stores my media and i play it locally over the network to a client pc using mpc-HC which is my video player of choice.

for hdtv streaming i prefer plex or kodi.

I do have a netflix account so i can watch media from hdtv using that. But whatever netflix doesn't have, i got on my NAS and stream from it instead.

right now i'm comfortably using a 4x4tb raid5 setup. seems to fit what i'm currently using right now, but if later i need to expand i got 2 more bays to add more hdds.

using a ts-877 (main NAS) and ts-653a/ts-509 pro (backup nas)

"anyway do you mean you store your battlenet game on the nas, or are using a windows vm on the nas to play diablo 3?"

I'm sometimes playing Diablo 3 via VM/Win10 and using NAS as a PC. 27" LCD connected to DisplayPort, keyboard + mouse to USB, Bluetooth adapter to USB (because of the sound through AirPods headphones) - everything goes smoothly and without any problems ;)

Other than for my data, one of the other key things that I'm using the Qnap for is MinimServer (a UPnP media server). I now have more than 52,000 FLAC tunes (over 1.5 TB) on the NAS and several Linn DS music players dotted about the house. I still also use Twonky for my archive music collection and also for displaying pictures (typically via a browser). With regards to my data, I have almost no data on local machines (other than what I'm currently working on) and as it all resides on the NAS, it means I only have one thing to back up (well, several jobs; one for each share on the Qnap) and as I am such a fan of RAID arrays, I back my Qnap up to 3 other Qnaps (so my backups also reside on RAID arrays) with one of these backup Qnaps living off-site (in case I get burgled, or have a fire in my Q room).
