TS451 here - same issue- happened probably 2-3 weeks ago but just didn't have the time to work on it.

Was researching it and realized this is a very current issue. I've opened a ticket with QNAP - hopefully they have a fix.

Same thing here on a TS-451+. On 11/21 I got 3 fan failure notices within 6 minutes and the device was bricked. Fan was still running. I have since migrated to a new 451+ but now I'm concerned about it happening again.

Hi all,

Just an update: I have registered, because I think someone from QNAP should step in. It is not possible SO MANY QNAP devices to die at the 5th year with the same error message. We have two QNAP 251+ devices, one of them is older (purchased few months before the second one), and it died with the same status as all the people described here. THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE TO BE A HARDWARE ISSUE. I'm starting to think it is either a bug or some kind of malware.

The device has not been touched last 5 years, it has its initial firmware (auto update is disabled), nothing has been changed since it is started 5 years ago, it was working fine and everything was OK until it send this warning and then - died.

When plugged in: Status LED - Green. After power on USB LED - BLUE, HDD2 - RED (all disks are removed). No signal on the HDMI display, no sound (beep or whatsoever). If a LAN cable is plugged with live networking - LAN LED - blinking Orange. If the LAN is disconnected, the LED is off - without restart. FAN is working properly - tested.

What I have tried so far:
- starting without disks
- starting with one memory slot empty (swapped and tested all combinations, even with different - working - RAM modules)
- starting without memory
- starting without flash chip
- replacing the CR2032 battery

THERE IS NO CHANGE in the behavior at ALL.

Please someone at QNAP to reply here what is causing this situation with so many devices in the period of few months. Should I expect the other one, purchased few months later, to stop working exactly at the 5th year?! How is this even possible?!

P.S. the disks and data are absolutely fine!

There's an article earlier in this thread that describes a hardware bug with Intel Atom and Intel Celeron chips where if the system is powered on for extended periods of time, the LPC bus circuitry will degrade and cause the system to become unbootable. QNAP, Synology, and other manufacturers were equally affected. Ultimately the issue is with Intel.

I see that folks have bought replacement x51 devices but it's my understanding that the same thing will happen to those devices in a few years.

Hi cuibonobo,

Thanks for the answer. Isn't it strange to happen at the exact time? And at same moment - to have so many devices at once?

If the problem is as mentioned, then at least there should be some re-balling or fixing the circuit / replacing a chip. If not - QNAP should sell the affected part/board at cost, so the users can continue to use the devices. This is an absolute fail from their side. So many customers trust to QNAP for quality and safety of the devices...

They should at least officially confirm the issue and provide solutions. I'm not buying another device with problems and predefined lifespan from them. I don't care that this is an issue with their supplier/partner. We are customers of QNAP, not Intel or any other manufacturer. I know that they are not responsible, since the device is out of warranty, but it is about the trust in the brand.

WTH, this **! Count me in as another affected TS-451+ user bit by this problem. Just got home to find my NAS beeping and the fan roaring, despite the error saying the fan had stopped working. The system was still working though. My first instinct was to power it down and then see if giving it some time would help the fan and reboot. Now I have the dreaded red lights. I'm kicking myself because I could have backed up my files before powering downs since I still had access. I have another QNAP TVS-882 that I could have backed up to.

Two of the drives are in RAID 0. Is it at all possible to take those out and put them in my TVS-882 and have it recognize the drives to save the data?

Is there any possible fix on the way for this? How can so many similar devices fail at the same time? Is there no recourse?

Edit - So upon further review, it looks like my NAS eventually did boot back up, although the HDD leds are still red. I'm in the process now of backing up all my files to my other NAS. It appears that the system fan has died, or it thinks it has. According to the system hardware info, the CPU and HDD temps are fine and I can feel air coming out of the back. The system temp and fan are not reporting anything, just 0deg for system and the fan speed has some crazy long number and a red X. It's like it thinks the fan has died and it may have at one point, because there was a error message from earlier saying the system reached about 127deg C and shutdown. That must have happened while I was at work. Then several more reports of fan failed, fan recovered, etc.

So maybe the fan or fan sensor needs to be replaced? Is that even possible? I certainly don't trust the NAS as is, but would rather not chuck it.

Just got a response to my support ticket. This is the advice if I want to prolong the life of the replacement TS-451+ I purchased to replace the 3 year old one that failed: "If you need to increase the lifespan of the NAS, please put it in the sleep mode or shut it down if you do not use it." This is not even remotely practical advice since overnight is when our household computers are pushing backups to it and those are being synced to the cloud. During the day it is clearly being used to serve media and files.

My first device lasted 3 years and 7 months.

@kch42

So you are running RAID0 with important data and no external backups? Really?

Hello - fairly infrequent poster here, but recently encountered the same issues described in this thread. TS-451 from ~ 2016.

The fan is running without issue, however the system randomly reports both temp and fan as "0". Two nights in a row (~9-10pm) I get a flurry of fan alert messages. The red LEDs stay on consistently since the error started happening.

I didn't say it was necessarily important data and I could live with the loss. This was my first NAS, but as I said, I have another larger one that does all my heavy lifting. I just had an old RAID 0 with some stuff on it. It has another drive that I was already using as a backup for my PC. That drive seems to have died altogether, which ** because it was an Seagate Ironwolf Red NAS drive meant for that sort of thing. I'm guessing it might have died due to a temp spike, but the RAID and NAS is actually still functioning fine now, and I have backed up all the data now, just in case. I'll continue to let it run(maybe putting it to sleep at night now) and see how long it goes. Still no system temp or fan speed being reported/updated. At some point when I have some free time, I'll probably crack it open and poke around to see if any fan cables are loose or something.

From the amount of similar errors on these boxes, it sounds kind of like a factory defect.

hi guys, did you have any update ?
i tried replacing RAM with original 1 Gb Module. i have a ticker opened, they told me first to use original RAM module, as segfault is related to memory... :-0 why not. let's do that.

obviously still same issue : hal_daemon crash, sigsegv. therefore no system FAN/Temp, disk in bay 2 still not detected.

It's alive !
i followed :

viewtopic.php?f=45&t=135089&start=150#p767546

the procedure works very well with TS-251 !
i could revive it with that 100 Ohms soldered between pin 1 and pin 8

NAS booted properly, FAN RPM and Temperature OK. Disk in Bay 2 online !

but for how long it will survive ? it's time to prepare a replacement
