Migrating to new NAS – Best Practice

Post by Jonz »

HI

Bought a new NAS (TS-431P3) and I wonder what best practice is (and give the best result, if any difference) when migrating data.

a) Move the disk physically from old to new NAS
b) Install new NAS on scratch and copy data from old to new NAS

The old NAS (TS-439) has been up and running for about 6 years (24/7) as a backup/download server until the PSU broke down caused by a power breakdown.

cat1 to cat2 devices should not be migrated and instead started from scratch

otherwise you can follow the qnap migration website, then backup and subsequently start from scratch

also invest in a ups and remember to do regular external backups
