Qnap TS-859Pro (not TS-869) with super old firmware

Post by creed »

Hi, recently i pulled the old NAS out and want to put it into a good use, the good things is it's all empty data with just 1 x 2TB that I've got as spare, I've plan to populate the 8 bays with fresh new 4TB drives.

One thing that i ran into some challenges is updating the firmware, it's running on a 3.2.5 version which is very old, I can't seems to update to any firmware of 4.x available from Qnap download section.

I've searched, googled, read through multiple post/threads that it seems I've to get the update from 3.2.5 -> 3.8.x -> 4.1.x -> 4.3.x

I'm cool with the update path but the problem is i can no longer find the 3.8.x/4.1.x firmware, trust me I searched/googled through, whatever post with those links are all dead!

Can someone enlighten me what possibly can i do? I did log a ticket to Qnap hoping i can get an answer but meanwhile if someone has the answer, it'll be much appreciated.

Thanks

https://www.qnap.com/en/download?model= ... y=firmware

when using outdated firmware, be mindful of things that may not be patched due to eol :'
https://www.qnap.com/en/security-advisories/

you could try asking qnap really nicely and hope they provide you the firmware
https://service.qnap.com/

just keep in mind that technical support may not necessarily be provided depending if your device is eol
https://www.qnap.com/en/product/eol.php

instead of using that old firmware, how about replacing it with something else? search the forum about unraid
https://forums.unraid.net/topic/98828-u ... e-ts-853a/

https://forums.unraid.net/topic/51213-r ... -qnap-nas/

https://forums.unraid.net/topic/79537-u ... nap-9-bay/

u install unraid on a usb flash drive, and enter bios and do not boot from the dom. instead use the usb flash drive with unraid installed on it.

you'd have to purchase n unraid license though. not sure if unraid would work on your model but i suspect it would.

Post by creed »

hey, thanks for the response, I've checked the download section it certainly don't have the older firmware, as well as logged a case with Qnap hoping for a response.

Really glad to hear that potentially "Unraid" can breathe new life into the TS-869, i'll keep this as a backup option, as I'd rather preferred a Qnap firmware update into 4.3.x :-)

Much appreciated!!!

### I felt like knocking my head into a wall, my model is TS-859Pro, funny enough i tried to search using the WaybackMachine, i can find 3.8.4 link for TS-869 but not TS-859 though the links posted on the same thread in the qnap forum. Is there any specific things we need to do to make the archive available? As funny enough only the TS-869 is available and not the other series though on the same date of the link posted.

any idea?

It appears that 3.8.4 for the TS-859Pro was not archived. The only TS-859Pro firmware archives I could find are:

F/W 4.0.2:
https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://eu ... -4.0.2.zip

F/W 4.2.0:

I have a TS-569 Pro, I performed a firmware recovery about a year ago, and then went straight to 3.8.4, so you should not have any issues upgrading to 3.8.4.

got the 4.0.2, but failed trying to get from 3.2.5 into 4.0.2, it seems somewhat i need to find a way to obtain the 3.8.x prior to move the firmware up the chain.

I am crossing my finger the qnap support will response but really don't have much hope on it for now.

Anyone know that i can get a copy of TS-859Pro 3.8.x firmware it'll be really appreciated.

i tried the update using Qfinder Pro that it failed, tried again using the Web-UI it seems it went thru and i'm suprised to see the progress bar went into 100%, rebooting the system and see whether it get to 4.0.2, if it does, i think the problem solved! Let leave it some faith, i am lucky as i do not have any data on it so i am pretty relax on trying it out.

## Update ##
Using the web-ui doing the same step by attemping to update from 3.2.5 to 4.0.2 was successful :-), now i'm moving into 4.2.0 then to 4.2.6 (latest), i think this solved my problem

@special thanks to all the guidance!

one of the older firmwares, not sure which exactly, had some vulnerability where if u used the live update, it may grab the fw update from a none official source? so yeah... best stay closest to latest. and when it's eol, keep it offline, or replace qts with an alternative os.

Thanks all, good that I have got the latest update on 4.2.6 working, my NAS is not aim for heavy duty for more of music streaming (not video) as well as document storage, so if this 4.2.6 breathe some new life of something siting idle for years I am happy

Thanks again
