I found this posting via Google. I hope I'm not breaking any rules by resurrecting this thread.
I just got a TS-230, and put in a single 750 GB drive I already had. I will eventually get some larger drives.
I'm seeing this same issue as the OP. Since I only have a single drive, I went with a static volume. On the volume management page, I see:
Raid Group 1 Capacity 689 GB (created automatically, I did not create this)
NAS Host: Disk 1 Capacity 698 GB
Volume Capacity 638 GB
Where has the other 50-60 GB gone? From what I'm reading here, QNAP will store any necessary system files within the allocated volume space. In other words, there should be no hidden volume that QNAP has reserved for its own use.
