[ISSUE] Installing fresh QTS OS

Post by Metalvain »

Model: TS-453 Pro

I feel like a complete noob but I have yet to figure out how to install QTS OS image from the Download Center -- https://www.qnap.com/en-us/download?mod ... y=firmware

I've tried using Rufus, Win32 DiskImager, unetboot, to create a bootable drive but it just goes to "no such partition" screen.

NOTE: I got a RHEL iso to work using above methods.

normally you boot up qnap nas, then login to qts (the nas device ip address port 8080) then update from there. your choices are live update, or you manually download the firmware from the product page, then select the firmware file via qts update browse firmware, then update.

if you have issue finding qts login page, you can download the qfinder utility to detect your qnap on the network and use that to open the qts admin page

or are you talking about this ? usually you don't do this unless you are doing it as part of the process for disinfecting your nas from malware, or your qnap had issues booting up due to firmware issue (software)
When to use the firmware recovery guide
This firmware recovery guide is intended for users who encounter system startup failure due to incomplete or unsuccessful firmware update caused by power outage or network disconnection during the process.

Thanks for the response.

I'm not sure which method to approach. I have removed all hard disks and booted, I then see the QNAP Splash screen, then it goes to a terminal that reads as follows:
error: no such partition
grub rescue>

I never hear a beep. QNAP Finder Pro does not find the device. At this terminal, I doubt it's getting an IP.

I attempted the "How to use USB boot disk to refresh the DOM for NAS" from your link above but you can see from the picture attached (IMG_4780.jpg) that the sda/sdb did not match what the tutorial stated and also I could not cd to the directory mentioned.

Hopefully this is all just user error.

NOTE: I got this NAS second-hand. Someone had installed Windows Server on it. I'm trying to just get it back to factory and stock OS.

I always perform a firmware recovery first on second hand QNAPs I purchase, then upgrade firmware.

Firmware recovery is fairly straight forward, especially for the Intel based units with video output.

Which firmware recovery would I do for my model? -- TS-453 Pro
I only see guides for TS-453A/B/U/etc

Also, will this get me back to factory and stock OS?

Once the recovery firmware is installed, you'll be able to upgrade to the current firmware.

Yes, that worked! Thank you!
Upgrading to latest firmware with Qfinder now.

Just FYI, my DOM was listed with fdisk as "/dev/sda".
Tutorials said it would be one of the following:
/dev/mmcblk0
/dev/mmcblk1
/dev/sdb
