nas on a lan only
Hi all i am a NOOB a very old noob. i had a WD my book live and got a email from WD about removing it from the internet because of a security issure. So i removed it and removed hard drive. I then bought a qnap ts-230 nas and joined this forum only to find about several security threats. I only want to watch my movie collection and listen to my music. I usually store my photo's and documents as a back-up as well.
My question is can someone do a step by step guide for dummies to set my nas up for lan only
TIA
Bill

Re: nas on a lan only
Only thing you need to do is to disable upnp on your router, without upnp or manual port forwards, your NAS will be only available in your local LAN..nothing else to do

Thankyou for the reply. Could you explain port forwarding and how to turn it off.

Here is an article on NAT that explains it
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network ... ranslation
The how to depends on your router model...check it's manual

Hi thanks again but i didnt have to duck that went so far over my head. As for router manual i am in the uk and i am with sky and the bit of paper showed me where the power and the phone cable went. It then showed how to connect to the router with the computer which i have and turned off upnp.

Re: nas on a lan only
Also, be aware if you install the original HDD from your WD into the QNAP, the drive must be formatted by the NAS before it can be used, which means you'll lose anything already on it.
