How configure NAS to act as simple network hub? (qts 4.5)

Post by HHHHH »

I'm currently using TS-X72_20220128-4.5.4.1931

WLAN router (IP 10.0.0.100) which acts as standard gateway, dhcp server

Port 1 (10GB) - connected to Internet WLAN router - IP 10.0.0.1 assigned
Default virtual switch configured for usage of virtualization station for shared internet of the VM

Because all of the ports of the internet wlan router are used I'd need to configure the qnap NAS to act as a simple network hub.

desired result:
Port 2 (1GB) - Notebook 1 (IP 10.0.0.2 assigned via DHCP) - internet connection from NAS
Port 3 (1GB) - Network Printer (IP 10.0.0.3 - fixed IP configured at WLAN router) - internet connection from NAS

Thunderbolt 1 - Notebook 2 (IP 10.0.0.4 assigned via DHCP) - internet connection from NAS
Thunderbolt 2 - Notebook 3 (IP 10.0.0.5 assigned via DHCP) - internet connection from NAS

How can I achieve this?

Thank you very much in advance!

Thunderbolt: use qFinder to create T2E, but there is a message that T2E affects thunderbolt performance

You already found the howtos how to configure the NAS as software defined switch...or you could simply invest 10 bucks into an actual switch (better)

Hi, why do you think a dedicated switch device is better?

Uses up CPU cycles...and if the NAS is busy could be slow

Also the NAS needs to be running and any connected device loses connectivity on reboots/shutdowns (e.g. firmware updates)

Thanks for the information! I assume it does not use resources if connected devices are shut down, right?

good point - how can I configure the NAS to perform firmware updates and reboots only per request not automatically?

Switching would only use CPU when data is flowing ..yes

You can disable autoupdate (latest and recommended) in the GUI
