HELP!!! Migrating to new QNAP NAS

Post by glennie »

Hi,

I was hoping someone could help me?

I currently have a TS-420 (Old I know!) running Firmware 4.3.3.0404 with 4x4TB RED WD drives.

My problem is, I'd like to migrate to a new NAS and just disk swap. However I can't find a compatible unit.

Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong area? I've seen the below lin k;

https://docs.qnap.com/nas/4.1/SMB/en/in ... ration.htm

However, I'm running 4.3 and if I was to go to something like a TS-451+ it will be surely running >4.2 OS, which make the above link on migration obsolete.

Basically, I want to buy a new unit, plug in my drives and away we go.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

Kind regards,

Glenn

I looks to me like the X20 series can migrate to almost any NAS. But not the 31 series. Here is the migration chart I have.

Thanks for the prompt reply Daniel.

So this chart (and I assume its official?) means I can migrate to any of the 'green' listed models, regardless of the OS?

Why don’t you check the 4.3 manual instead of the 4.1.
Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

you don't want to nigrate from an old cat1 to a new cat2

you would be stuck with a legacy volume with limited expansion and missing features

Which should be in the manual.

That chart is what QNAP sales use to help advise on what NAS to get when you want to migrate.

agreed. i too was in this situation last time. only real solution was to reinitialize from scratch. i would not recommend nas migration due to the reasons dolby mentioned.
