Help choosing NAS with fast CPU

Postby kallek » Tue Nov 06, 2018 8:51 pm

I'm looking for a NAS that is fast at downloading files from usenet while still be able to transfer large files on my home network. It needs a fast cpu since there is a lot of crc-checking, encrypting and unraring involved. I also want to be able to use at least 3 HDD's. I'm looking at three different NAS and I would like some input on which one is the fastest. I don't care about video decoding and 10 GB LAN since I won't use that. The different NAS I'm looking at are

TS-332X
TS-328
TS-453Be

The first two have ARM-based cpus and the last one have a Intel Celeron. Any input is appreciated.

Do I need an even faster NAS? Any recommendations?

hard to say .. that en/decrypting might be taxing on the cpu ..but what is it ..how much is it ? .. does it have to be in real time ? are those modules even available for arm ?

You get what you paid for!
I've never regretted spending a bit more.
And don't believe the specs, things are always a bit slower than Qnap advertise.
Spend as much as you can,

I'm using sabnzbd and it is available for ARM. The SSL-decrypting and crc verification is done in real time, but if it the detects an error it has to do par reconstructing which can take some time depending on CPU and storage speed. The TS-332X and the TS-453Be are in the same price range but one of the has quad Cortex A57 CPU 1.7 Ghz while the TS-453Be has an Intel Celeron CPU at 1.5 Ghz. The A57 has a higher clock rate, but I do'nt know if it makes it faster.

I found this on the sabnzbd wikipage:

https://sabnzbd.org/wiki/advanced/highspeed-downloading

"ARM based systems (NASes for example) will show much lower number (below 25000), and will have a lower maximum download speed than PCs with a current Intel/AMD CPU with a CPU Pystone available performance of 40000 or higher."

Guess that answers my question. The Intel CPU will probably be faster although it has a lower clock speed

How critical is the unrar speed?? I have the Qnap 451+ and using myjdownloader, it unrar's only slightly slower than my desktop trying to unrar it over the network. It's not slow by any means, unraring say a 10gb rar file only takes a few minutes.

The 453be is also nice because it has a pcie slot, you can upgrade to a 10gb network very easily for faster transfer speeds from your desktop.
