24TB RAID6 file server

Post by Noidem Stent » Sun Apr 05, 2020 4:01 am

I would like to buy a 24TB RAID6 QNAP NAS file server. SMB (and, if possible, NFS ).
I do not need fancy features, I do need rsync from/to NAS as root. That's about it. Basically: minimal requirement.
Super fast speed is not biggest concern. 24TB and RAID6 are (I would rsync backup many devices to the NAS).
What would be a recommended choice? Note I get somewhat lost in QNAP Product portfolio.

I have a test unit 853BU (6x6TB Ironwolf Pro RAID6 and 2x1TB Samung Evo RAID1 Qtier) with a 10GbE card

around 650MB/s read and write (probably hitting qtier max speed of 6Gbits) it's not bad

was cheap and seems to work as expected

Thanks @dolbyman for helping out. One more 'requirement' ... is the device rather quiet or rather noisy?
I mean, will someone 5m away from it be able to work undisturbed?

that device is in a server rack ..in an isolated server room with a/c ..hard to tell ..but not very quiet

None of my home NAS are that close to a work or sleep place.... but I have a 951X that is relatively silent (large fan)

And remember HDDs also make noise

A TVS-672xt may be suitable for your needs.

As for noise, that is subjective, some people are more tolerant of noise than others, however under most uses, at 5 meters, the nosiest part of the NAS will be the hard drives.
