Need Help: 2 NAS Enclosure Setup - One SSD and Other with HDD

Post by TheAnji »

Hi Experts need help. I am new here.

I have ordered TVS-872-XT and IronWolf Pro 16TB x 8 HDDs. Its just arrived today, still in the box.
I am rethinking to consider SSDs instead of HDDs for "longer life" and "Speed".

Here is my need.

I am videographer, I shoot with DSLR 4K RAW. Editing in Final Cut Pro.
to my workflow .. I need around 20 TB of space is good enough. so thinking to get SSDs,. Once editing is completed, I can move to Backup to HDDs.

Here is what I am thinking. instead of 872-Xt.

I get 672-XT. 6 Crucial 4TB. i.e. 24TB. Setup as RAID 0 for 4 times WRITE speed. No need of Data Protection here as I am using another Backup. I use this as main regular workflow.

Get another QNAP TS-932PX-4G 5+4 just for backup. 4 Ironwolf or WD Red 16 TB. i.e. 64 TB or more. setup as RAID 5 or 6. I keep a copy of my data here. also finished videos full backup. Storage is preference here. not speed.

Is this good setup? will it work? am I gaining anything here?
or should I keep 872Xt with 8 16TB Ironwolf Pro.

Thanks in advance.

According to Bob Zelins posts, he implemented 872xt (nowadays 12 or 1688x) for small video production crews ...HDD are fast enough for sequential loads, no need for high IOP SSD

Also make sure you get no old stock of that model, or it will end you here

Thanks a lot dolbyman for your help. I have gone through the thread. the summary is .. issue seems fixed in Motherboard version 1.7. Mine is 2.0. (Found behind CPU Fans).
Regarding backup ... I am gonna get another cheaper QNAP unit just for storage where I don't need performance.
