TS453Pro help with upgrading to new QNAP

Post by marklyn »

My TS453Pro has the dreaded System Booting >>>>> issue (from the fan 1 failure). I do have a current backup of everything but still not sure I want to do the 100 ohm resister temp fix until I can replace the QNAP.
I think I paid around $570 for my current unit and would like to replace it with on with similar (and better) features so I'm asking for suggestions.
I don't want to chance doing the temp fix only for it to fail again when I'm not at home (I take long regular long trips).
My needs are home user with large network, lots of files stored written to one of the volumes (security system video records). Other than than, regular amounts of large file copies, general use.
If I stay in the QNAP line, what would be a comparable, minimum features to equal my TS453Pro?
If I wanted to spend up to $1k, what would be a better choice?
If I consider out of the QNAP line, is there another brand with similar features, price range and dependability?

I think I want to stay in the QNAP because I'm hoping this will be a 1) firmware update check for new QNAP, pull and switch drives to new system, restore backup and hopefully just run from there. Is that possible?

See here for migration options
https://www.qnap.com/en/nas-migration

also make sure that you do not expose your NAS for remote access (long regular trips)

Thanks for the link, that was helpful, but the procedures in this document imply you're migrating data from one set of disks (from old NAS) to new NAS.
I'd need a solution where I can just pull the drives from my old NAS and put them into the new NAS since the old NAS is no longer booting up.
Did I miss something in that document related to that?
Thanks!

OK, sorry, I re-read, thought the data migration meant moving data from one set of disks to another new set of disks.
So, assuming I can pop out the disks from my TS453Pro and pop them into another hardware compatible QNAP NAS (yet researching)...
My existing QNAP setup was:
Disk 1 & 2, Static single volumes set up as a RAID 1 group.
Disk 3 & 4 were static single volumes.
My volume names were DATAVOL1 (disk 1 &2, DATAVOL2 (disk 3), and DATAVOL3 (disk 4)
I was current on QTS OS updates.

Is this as easy as booting up the new QNAP, restoring my system backup file, rebooting and then putting in the drives from the old NAS?
I'm also open for suggestions for a step or two upgrade in a new QNAP. I do like the interface built onto the tower instead of the icons on some boxes. Would like something that would be faster.

Please explain again how disks 1&2 were setup, you cannot RAID1 combine two static single disks

The process (as explained on the website), swap the disks over...done. All will be as before

Please also explain that last sentence again .. what interface on what tower ?

One of the techs I just spoke to suggested the 453D to replace my 453Pro.
He also gave me a video link to the migration steps, looks easy (if it works).
Any thoughts on the 453D?

Sorry, disks 1 & 2 are set up as raid 1, so I may have been looking at old notes when I said static single disks. I'm weak in understanding in this area.
I was referring to the LCD panel on my 453Pro. If I get the suggested 453D without the LCD interface, I'm wondering out loud how I can tell there's an error and what the error is if the unit failed the way it did, or similarly.

Even Units without display have LED's, any error would result in some sort of status code (red amber color LED) and you will need to access the GUI to find out what it means.

Otherwise only more expensive units have LCD displays nowadays
