Upgrade from TS-230 to TS-253D or TS-453D

Post by lanc3lot »

Hey everyone,
I think it's time to upgrade my TS-230 after two years and go to either 253D or 453D. I am using Qnap especially with Plex (have plex pass) and Sonarr, Radarr
In the past I had various problems as pretty often these apps stopped working and had to restart server. Lately I use them via docker despite that it says that it's better to use docket with 4GB Ram (TS-230 have only 2 and a bad cpu comparing to x53D which is quad celeron
Also it common to have messages when trying to view 4K content through my Nvidia Shield that the speed of the server is too slow to play the file.

I know for the most recent model of Qnap, the TS-464,would be better option buy I plan to proceed during October and till now I haven't found any store that sell it in Europe (I live in Athens, Greece). I can find 253D through Amazon at 350 euro currently which is something I can afford and 453D at 380 or 400 euro (as far as saw 464 will be priced around 700 euro). I also plan to sell TS-230 around to 140-150 euro and keep the HD (I use it currently with just one 4TB)

My question to any other people that have 253D or 453D is how it performs with 4K and maybe Sonarr, Radarr and ofcourse plex. My files are around 10gb to 80GB and ofcourse via gigabit ethernet. I also plan to buy the extra 4GB ram to further boost it, maybe not front the start but in 4-6 months period time
Thank you in advance for your time!

i got the ts-253d model it's good. it also comes with 2.5gbe ports which goes well with newer gear that are starting to appear on motherboards, switches and wireless aps. the only con is it's a 2bay and it's stuck at qts (doesn't have the quts hero which has zfs, but if ur ok with that, then isn't an issue).

another thing to consider, if u go with the 453d, it's a 4bay model, so you can fit in 4 hdds. with 4 hdds you could go for raid5 (which is what i use)

so you are storing 4k content? then i suspect you should be going for the 4bay model. 4k requires much more storage compared to 1080p (i'm fine with 1080p. for 4k i use netflix for that. but what works for me won't necessarily fit what works for your requirements).

as for what model performs well for nvidia shield accessing media from a qnap, i found u some threads that may shed some answers

this is a review of your ts-230
https://musicphotolife.com/2021/02/qnap ... verything/

to my understanding, i saw someone posted last time their experience for qnap arm models streaming to nvidia shield, and they said it was fine. Though i'm not sure if they tested with 4k content.

the x53d should be capable of running a few docker apps like sonarr, radar hosted on the nas box fine.
https://www.reddit.com/r/qnap/comments/ ... rr_radarr/
https://www.reddit.com/r/qnap/comments/ ... arrradarr/
https://www.reddit.com/r/qnap/comments/ ... nd_radarr/

and the nvidia shield can access the media from the nas box.

if u host plex on the qnap, there is a list that explains if it's capable or not
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... 1274624273

but if ur using the nvidia shield to handle it, then the list above shouldn't apply afaik (most people opt to use this rather than the former).

if you need to upgrade ram, you can check the forum search to see what ram sticks are compatible for this 453d series. the qnapstore sells ram, or you can go to crucial website and use the nas model selector and it will guarantee their ram stick is compatible for the qnap nas model u r using. i've bought a couple of crucial ram sticks in the past to use in qnap, and they've all been fine so far.

I have a 453D, with 4x8Tb WD Reds.
I installed 2x8Gb RAM modules (crucial CT2K8G4SFS824A, look it up in skroutz)
They work just fine and can run a couple of VMs on it.
After a while, I installed a QM2-2P-384 - x8 with 2x 1Tb Crucial NVme SSDs, locally sourced again).
I use the SSDs as app and OS storage in RAID 1, and the HDDs in RAID 5.
It runs smoothly, the HDDs spin-ip only for accessing data on them, and it is dead silent.
Main use is photo & video storage, and running virtual machines.
Bottom line, get the 16Gb upgrade, you won't regret it.
When you save enough money, get the QM2 card (you can go for a cheaper one, this one is overkill for the 453D) and a couple NVme SSDs for the OS and apps.

Ty both for the answers, very nice ram kit I will go for it for sure. I am wondering if in 4K 453D will have less problems than 230,in terms of the message that pops that server is not so fast to play the movie. I assume comparing with 16gb ram and Celeron Cpu the answer is yes
