Hello,
I am deciding between the TS-464 and the TS-453D. According to the QNAP website, the TS-464 has twice as much power consumption in idle mode as the 453D. (10 watts more, which means approx. 350€ increased electricity costs over 10 years, at least with the current prices in Europe).
https://www.qnap.com/en-us/product/comp ... t_overview
I'm surprised by these figures, as the processor in the TS-464 has just a 5W higher TDP and it is 10 nm in the 464 instead of 14nm in the 453D.
Can you confirm the difference in power consumption of both devices in idle by a measurement?
Many thanks and kind regards,
Lukas

Re: Energy consumption TS-464 vs. TS-453D
I came across this question as well. It would be great to get some insight on real life power consumption of the TS-464.
What strikes me is that according to QNAP the TS-264 has the same power consumption as the TS-253D (8.198W idle, 12.448W operation) even though it has the same (higher performance) CPU as the TS-464. How is this possible?
Also, as I understand the TS-x64 comes with either a Celeron N5105 or a Celeron N5095. Which one is it currently? And how can QNAP specify one single power rating for the TS-x64 even though the N5095 has a TDP of 15W and the N5105 has 10W?

All great questions to ask QNAP support, without individuals in possession of these units to do measurements .. nothing a user forum can answer.

The TS-464 has been available for several months now, hasn't it?

There is only a handful of regulars (that come here not just to ask questions but also to answer them), chances are that only if one of these people bought such a unit, you will get an answer.
Not trying to be party pooper, just honest.
If you want to broaden the request check with the QNAP subreddit as well.

Pretty hard to do any real comparison against actual numbers. The number, type, model of hard drives used and the amount of access will make the range in variance such that the values are meaningless.
The only way to know for sure would be benchmark data with identical configurations and identical load.

Re: Energy consumption TS-464 vs. TS-453D
I did that. I contacted QNAP and pointed them to the low power consumption values specified for the TS-264. A few days ago I received an initial response that they would review and if necessary correct the values, and they actually did that. I just checked the QNAP website again. The power consumption of the TS-264 was increased to 18.288W idle and 29.086W in operation. The values for the TS-464 haven't changed. For me this is a bit unfortunate. I find close to 20W/30W for a 2 bay NAS too high, in particular in these times. I had hoped that a newer CPU is more energy efficient than its predecessor.
QNAP have not answered my question why a uniform power consumption value is specified for the TS-x64 even though it can come with two different CPUs with different TDP.

Re: Energy consumption TS-464 vs. TS-453D
since you are worried about energy consumption, have you managed to setup sleep drive/spin down working?
so when not in use, they can then go into sleep/idle and this will save you on power consumption.

Re: Energy consumption TS-464 vs. TS-453D
I don't have a NAS yet. I read several times that putting the drives in sleep/idle mode is difficult because the system keeps waking them up even without user interaction and despite the power settings.

Re: Energy consumption TS-464 vs. TS-453D
yeah i gave up because i couldn't get the sleep to work correctly. also you have to weigh whether sleep drives is better than not sleep drives

https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/co ... _your_nas/
theres another setting though. you can schedule power on/off for the nas. i never used this myself but i know this option exist. so during your sleep hours you can specify it to turn on/off itself.
it's not as convenient as sleep mode, but it's more likely to work since it's set by a schedule.
*update
i saw one user recommended to replace the OS with unraid, and the sleep mode for that seems to work
