Multimedia storage for muddle company

Post by Nesh2305 »

Hi
I need to buy a qnap storage for manage 30tb video/photo files

the users have access to storage with smb protocol
This storage must to expandable

So we want to create a two-raid of 50TB (per each). The first raid is operative, the second raid is for the backup of another external little storage

I need fast speed to manage video (we modify and work on many videos simultaneously).

What is the best qnap?

I thought the TS-1273AU-RP-8G or TVS-h1688X-W1250-32G
Thanks

Be careful with expandable storage and ZFS based OS, you cannot add disks to RAIDs on ZFS.

Also if you want fast sequential storage for multiple users, do not break the NAS into several RAID and pools, just create one large RAID and pool (you can still devide the pool up in volumes/shares (on ZFS)) the more spinning disks, the more performance

Thanks, @dolbyman.
What is OS that manages disks and space upgrade?

I must add a disk and upgrade space without re-create volume

Can you say me some models?
My budget is 10 k more or less (with hd)

Thanks

The OS is called QTS (QNAP TURBO STATION)

If you want to add diks later check for a system that can run QTS (most QuTS units also run QTS).

i have a 1288X but you probably want something with more bays

You might want to check for advice from @bob zelin on this forum who installs many qnap systems for media storage and editing

TVS-h1688X-W1250-32G is a great unit for video editing.
You can have 2 small SSDs for the System Pool for the Operating System + apps. Then 12 HDDs RAID6 should provide a good amount of storage fast enough for multiple video editors.

You can have 2 shared folders with 50TB each. Or many shared folders.
I would not break up the RAID groups since just 6 HDDs in a RAID would have less throughput for video editing.
TS-1273AU-RP-8G is likely not fast enough.

If you later need to expand the storage on the TVS-h1688X-W1250-32G, you can add an expansion unit. But it would likely be a new storage pool for the expansion unit. If you want a NAS that lets you expand its current pool with a SAS expansion, TS-h1886XU-RP-R2-D1622-32G-US is good for a few simultaneous 4K video editors. It can take a few 12 bay or 16 bay expansion units in the future.
Our SAS expansions have a long ETA, but if you don't need to expand for at least 3 months I expect expansion availability to improve significantly.

Something even higher-end for even more editors at once would be our 87XU series.
You likely won't need to go that far, but it should be possible to expand up to 2PB on one of those units.

Everything comes down to money - "how much do you want to spend".
I do nothing but install QNAP Systems for professional video editors.
On the high end, the models that Daniel just suggested are correct - the TVS-h3087 (24 SATA drives), h2287 (16 SATA drives), and h1887 (12 SATA drives) are great.
A real bargain for a rack mount solution is the TS-h1886XU-RP, which is a 12 bay that works great. I always add a QNAP QXG-10G2TB, or QXG-10G2T-X710 card to this system, because it only
comes with a SFP+ 10G card, and not a copper 10Gbase-T card.

For non rack mount systems, the TVS-h1688X 12 bay and TVS-h1288X 8 bay are both great. And for those on a really tight budget, for a small team (2 - 3 guys) you can get the TS-h886 (add RAM and a 10G card) 6 bay, or the new very nice TVS-h874 (add a 10G card). All of these are great.

Just make sure to avoid products like the TS-832PX. I would never buy the 1273AU. The 1273AU is $2200 at B&H, and for $800 more, you can get the amazing TS-h1886XU-RP.
