I am looking to reduce desk space, improve security by replacing my old TS-451A with either of the above and virtualising my old FX6300 based win 7 PC onto the NAS as well. Of course the NAS is also a backup for other PCs snd remote devices too And gets backed up in its turn etc).
Looking at cpu performance the i3 8100T looks a bit better than the Ryzen chip v1500B but not by much. The Pentium also seemed good on some comparisons.
The 473A is much cheaper.
The 472XTs seem to have had terrible reliability issues, and the i5 version is now legacy.
The 472XTs have inherent GPUs so HDMI output and passthrough for the VM. 473A needs a video card.
So any thoughts would be appreciated.
At a pinch I could go to a different unit using QuTS Hero system but have no idea if they will play nicely in the sandpit with my other QTS units.
Regards
TVS-472XT-i3 or PT Or TVS-473A…

The TS-451A is a current and supported CAT2 device, how would a new NAS improve security ? (Or was that targeted to virtualizing the Windows7 machine?)

Hmm quiet here.
Further, as the 472-xt use the LGA 1151-2 socket, and those chips are 7/8/9 generation intel chips, and these chips are hard to find now, perhaps the upgrade options are limited unless maybe they will take the Xeon chips?

I would look at the i3 or i5 version of this NAS
https://www.qnap.com/en-us/product/tvs-h674
Xeon would work too, but only the higher power ones like the 12 and 1688x would be good virtualization machines

Thanks Dolbyman, I came to the same point as well as it has an modern LGA1700 socket. Sad the price is three times the TVS-474! But it is four times the machine. .
