the whole upgrade process took me 2 hours which includes troubleshooting with RAM, also I was not prepared to have longer screw driver handy, so had to look for it.. As well, unscrewed more screws than were needed so had to deal with those too..

which RAM do you have? I'm going to check the "broken" RAM tomorrow on another PC, and if not will plan another troubleshooting

What about the CPU upgrade process? How much time it takes?

so I didn't want to wait and managed to reach the functional RAM and swap it with the "broken" one without unscrewing all and it worked fine in combination with stock 2gb RAM making all 10GB again. however, when I place 2x8gb, the system wont boot.. it also won't boot if you have only one 8GB of this ram module set in place.. I suspect it has something to do with the RAM type (DDR3L vs DDR3? ).. strange though, need to add below to incompatible list of RAMs, if there's one..
Corsair Vengeance Performance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3L 1600MHz PC3 12800 Laptop Memory Kit (http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance ... B00EXPNG5Y)

this is what seems to be the stock RAM
http://www.provantage.com/transcend-ts2 ... RSD1A5.htm

based on specs, I need 8GB of [DDR3 1600 So-DIMM CL11 unbuffered non-ecc] - google gives me CT2KIT102464BF160B (http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-PC3-12800 ... B006YG8X9Y), hope that will work..

thank you very much, meantime I received another Kingston KVR16S11K2/16, and those didn't work either.. 10 GB RAM must be my destiny.. I'll order two of yours now (kvr16ls11/8) for last and if that won't work, I don't know

I ordered that one from what I have seen on the boards here and mine has no problems.

Have you put your unit under heavy load and checked the temps / fan speeds? I want to change the fans only because of how loud they are. I hear that the Noctua are much quieter but they wont give you the RPMs that the factory fans allow. I wonder if it makes a difference. Any thoughts?

well I tried it and it didn't work out for me, contacted qnap support but all they say is "we don't want to talk about 3rd party gear you stick in our system"
noctua fans that I installed are much quieter, now most of noise is coming from four HDDs

Then i suspect there's an issue with the motherboard, is the only explanation i have.
If you bought from amazon you have 1 month to give back to them :)
