Just finished my upgrade of my TVS-671 to a I7-4770k. Everything seems to be running great. Max temp i have seen so far is 62C under a stress test (Video Encoding). One question i have though, is I am not seeing the clock go into the turbo range. System is only reporting 3.5Ghz. Even while running a windows VM i am not seeing the 3.9Ghz under 100% load. Has anyone else seen this? or am i missing something?

here is the terminal
[~] # grep MHz /proc/cpuinfo
cpu MHz : 3500.000
cpu MHz : 3500.000

It runs now with an i7-4790T and 16 GB RAM (from A-Data).
Everything seems to run as expected. I was a little bit worried when the device powered itself off at the first boot. But then it automatically booted again and was operational.

I have read that the TVS-471 uses a 12 cm cooling fan. I have looked at noctua and they offer different models with different rpm and noise values. Does anyone know which one should be suited for the TVS-471?

They offer:

NF-F12 PWM - 1500 rpm - 22,4 db/A - 93,4 m3/h
NF-P12 PWM - 1300 rpm - 19,8 db/A - 92,3 m3/h
NF-S12A PWM - 1200 rpm - 17,8 db/A - 107,5 m3/h

It seems to me that the last one is the most effective and quiet one. Are there other things or requirement to consider for the QNAP?
Hello i am new to this forum and i am also intrested wich fan would be best for THE qnap tvs-471
I took the Noctua NF-S12A PWM 120x120x25 and it runs perfectly and quiet.

How easy/hard was it to disassemble and reassemble the TVS-471? Did you need any special tools?
What fan did you decide on eventually?

Many thanks

Hi there,

I just upgraded my TVS-471 with 16 Go RAM & Core i7 4790s
It works fine except that i got an error when it rebooted, on slot 1 : "A drive has been detected but is inaccessible. Please check it for faults."

I've tried to swap the disks, both disks are correctly working on slots 2 & 3,
So it doesn't seem to comes from my HDD ( run SMART test on both & it's working correctly). I also tried to boot with HDD 1 & 2 separately & they are both working when booting on slot 2.

It seems like slot 1 controller is not correctly working..

Any idea...?

Many thanks for your help!

Hi,

It's quite easy to desassemble (took me around 45 mns to desassemble & reassemble)
I used a Phillips screwdriver 30 cms long.
I'm using the NF-S12A, it's working great, better than the original one (around 720 with proc idle). with 70% workload, proc temp is no more than 55° (core i7 4790S)
Be sure to note all the screws.

Hey pgf92,

Were you able to get this resolved? I'm looking into doing the exact same upgrade (4790S processor and fan) but of course I'm a bit concerned since the warranty will be void.

Hi Chagerdan,

I opened a ticket with support yesteday, they asked me to send it back so they can check and change it if necessary.
It seems to be a hardware issue.
So I had to disasemble it and reassemble with original parts :)
I don't know what happened (maybe I touched one of the disks connectors while removing the disk controllers card).
I'll post the final result when support get back to me.

I don't think the warranty will be void, as I was very careful to put back all the screws on their original places (they have some red mark), plus you can change the proc without unplugging the MB (there is only one cable that will void the warranty, and you don't have to remove it).

I will update soon with some photos I took.

Hi just was wondering how is going your NAS on 4770K? Is it stable and no issues? I got one spare 4790 and was wondering does my 471 will make it. Power supply is 250W so it looks like it should't be a problem.

I have had absolutely no issues running the 4770k. Just this weekend I switched it to a I5-4690k and have been testing on that too. So far so good! Temps seem close, the i5 idles about 1-3C cooler . The only thing i really noticed is that to no surprise. My VMs are happier with the 4770k and trans-coding is only slightly faster with the 4770k but respectively with more heat. I am actively trying to get a hold of a 4790k for more testing. After I find one and get it tested I can let you know. Might be a while though because locally where I am they are not selling for very cheap and nobody really want to trade for an i5-4690k hahaha.

I got normal 4790 (without K) 84Watt. Anyway thanks for reply and its good enough for me that you tested 2-3 month on 4790K, I think soon i3 from NAS will go as Kodi server my PC will get upgrade and 4790 will be installed in TVS-471

Hi there, I just got a brand new NAS from QNAP! Great support team, really quick (less than 2 weeks).
I will upgrade proc, RAM & Fan after I reinstall it completely.
I looked closely at the jojetski method (http://jojetski.com/upgrading_the_qnap_ts-470_nas.html) and he is unscrewing the whole back plane (I removed the HDD controller card instead), maybe I'll try that in order to avoid damaging the controllers.

Why are people opting for the Noctua NF-S12A instead of the NF-P12 or NF-F12? Sure, the NF-S12A pushes a bit more air, but at a low static pressure. Because the fan pushes air through a radiator, it would seem that the NF-P12 or NF-F12 would be better options. the NF-F12 is a bit louder, but I'd doubt 22.4dB would be audible (WD RED 8TB drives are 20dB idle and 29dB seeking). And even if the fan was audible, you could install the LNA to reduce the noise down to 18.6dB (more quite than the NF-S12A while still having more static pressure).

Anyway, just interested if maybe people started getting the NF-S12A based on noise and airflow without considering the probably more important static pressure when used to cool a radiator. The NF-S12A is really meant to be a case fan, where there's very little static pressure. The NF-F12 is designed to push more air when there's more resistance (like when pushing air through a radiator in the TVS-X41).

Thoughts?

Tim
