TVS-473 vs TVS-471

Post by MichaelSee »

I am having a hard time deciding which NAS I wanted, the newer released TVS-473, or the older TVS-471. Assuming I do not have any pricing problem and I am using only GBe connection (not 10-GBe), which is a better buy considering:

1. Transfer speed between Windows PC to NAS on a single 1GBe connection
2. Internal transfer speed
3. Caching through M.2 SSD, how useful is this?
4. Heat?

Not sure if any other considerations I should be concern of... Need advice!

Thanks,
Mike :ashamed:

No difference at all. Minor exception might be the case where the processor is under high load, as the 473 has some more power.
MichaelSee wrote:2. Internal transfer speed
Essentially the same.

Depends on the usage. I fell in love (as a 10 GbE user) with the Qtier (Auto Tiering) capabilities, were often used data resides on the SSD (this can be M.2 or on the SATA slots) - and the M.2 modules are allowing to use all 3.5" slots for capacity. MichaelSee wrote:4. Heat?
Cooling system is taking care - the TVS-463 SoC (AMD GX-424CC SOC with Radeon R5E GPU) has a max TDP of 25W (clock fixed at 2.4 GHz), the TVS-473 SoC (AMD Embedded R-Series RX-421BD Radeon R7 GPU) has a base clock of 2.1 GHz, and can boost up to 3.4 GHz - the price for the overall better performance plus some more capabilities is a max. TDP of 35W.

Would you consider using HDMI based playback or using Linux Station for example?

The 471 is an Intel based Chipset.

TVS-471-PT-4G: Dual-core Intel G3250 3.2 GHz Processor
TVS-471-i3-4G: Dual-core Intel Core i3-4150 3.5 GHz Processor

One other thing to keep in mind, especially if you will be using VirtualStation.

Max memory on the TVS-471 is 16GB, TVS-473 is 64GB.

Do the comparison.
They're kinda positioning 473 more prosumer. 471 will go at some point soon.
Crappy USB expansion on 473 vs REXP-1000 Pro on 471.

I am also interested in this comparison.

Which CPU is better? Any advantage of Intel over AMD or vice versa?

I get the impression the TVS-x73 is better than the TVS-x71, but it is considered "middle range" while the x71 is considered "high end"

According to the announcement, it sounds like the x73 should be available, but I do not see it anywhere. Does anyone know when it will be available? Or pricing?

I'm interested in a NAS that can do high-quality/bitrate/resolution transcoding for Plex. Any other NAS I should consider?

Great info, thanks!

How is the x73 faster than the i5, but transcodes slower than the i3? Is this only referring to hardware transcoding? For example, would Plex transcode faster on the x73?

m.2 for laptops means light weight ssd since the ssd m.2 stick is thiny and light weight compared to the previous sata3 ssds. But for QNAP purposes, the pros will be for the better performance as m.2 does not have the same bottle neck as sata3. So ssd performance is better to go with an m.2

The ssd caching feature is good because it's kinda like how you install your windows OS on an ssd, while your normal data like videos, music etc are all on your mechanical drives. So it's like that. But under ssd caching options you can fine tune the settings.

heat isn't going to be an issue. I run my ts-653A 24/7 for more than a year and haven't had issues. I do recommend to keep a clean room to avoid dust build up. Cause eventually the hdd vents and fan exhaust can get filled with dust. At that point you'll have to power down your unit and clean the device. Using a blower from a distance may help, but keep vacuum away because of the electronics :)

I believe you are correct that they are comparing HW Transcoding performance for that item.
RobbieG wrote:For example, would Plex transcode faster on the x73?
Since Plex is SW based transcoding, the beefier CPU of the x73 wins.

I took a slightly different approach. I bought the TVS-471 when it was highly discounted. Pushed the RAM up to 16GB and swapped the CPU with an i7 that I managed to source for cheap. Put a QM2-2S card in there to give me two M2 SATA slots for my cache. Total NAS price turned out to be cheaper than the TVS-473. Super happy. Ofcourse, my TVS-471 will cease to get support before the TVS-473 but for the moment, it does the job nicely and looks a lot smarter in Black (Intel still inside!)
NAS : TVS-471
CPU : i7-4790T
RAM : 16GB
HDD : 2 x 10TB + 1 x 6TB + 1 x 4TB
SSD : 2 x 500GB (used for SSD Cache)

Bruce, I'm leaning towards doing the exact same thing. Can you tell me what QM2-2S card you picked?
And a couple of months in, do you still like your setup, or have you run into restrictions that in hindsight would have steered your differently?
Thanks!

In the end, I took the same route as Bruce choosing the TVS-471, changing the CPU to i7-4790s, upped the RAM to 16GB, change the CPU fan to Noctua, added the QM2 for the SSD (but in the end realise the caching does not work as intend, in fact it is slowing down the entire NAS!), and now feel like it is cool, quiet and run like a rocket! Could not be happier.... :DD :DD :DD
