VMWare ESXi iSCSI and Disaster Recovery

Post by ralbano »

Hello, actually we're using VMWare ESXi with local SATA Disks.
We're planning to implement a NAS in our datacenter to mount VM's in iSCSI, with at least 2xGigabit ethernet on the server and the NAS (port trunk).
Our wish is to replicate the iSCSI LUNs to a second QNAP NAS, while VM's are running, let's say a hot backup of LUNs in a scheduled way.
We already evaluated backup tools for VMWARE, but we want to implement this replica/backup mechanism at NAS level for each of our LUNs.

This is posible with QNAP solution ?

RDA.-

That would not be a problem. The Qnap NAS can be set up to take regular snapshots of an iSCSI lun. Because VMs would be on a lun they could be automatically backed up. Snapshots can be set to automatically remotely replicate to another nas so that you would have another backup. Taking a snapshot does not stop the VMs from running so it would not be a problem to make hot backups in a scheduled way. Then the Snapshot can be remotely replicated to another NAS without interfering with your VMs because copying a snapshot of a Lun that contains VMs does not interfere with the VM's themselves.
