Migrating from HS-251+ with UX-800P

Post by zylch »

Dear QNAP community,

I am a newbie and looking for advice on upgrading my current configuration. This is my current setup:

- HS-251+ NAS with 2 x 6 TB drives in RAID 1 configuration (Storage Pool 1, 78% used)
- UX-800P expansion unit with 8 x 6 TB drives in RAID 5 configuration (Storage Pool 2, 93% used)

My problem is that:
1) I am approaching full capacity on both the NAS and the expansion unit.
2) The current configuration makes it almost impossible for me to backup the content, since only 1 expansion unit can be attached to the HS-251+ and it would be extremely impractical to have to manually backup to individual external HDDs. I am getting more and more nervous about losing all my data, as I have no backups and feel my current RAID 5 configuration does not offer enough protection.

I thought of migrating my HS-251+to a new NAS with more bays and capable of accepting 2 expansion units, then adding an extra UX-800P. This would solve the capacity issue but still not the backup problem. I have a couple of questions about this:
- I know I can migrate to various NAS by swapping the disks, but will my current UX-800P content be recognised by the new NAS after migrating?
- If that's the case, can I then configure the new UX-800P with the current one as RAID 6, to increase the capacity while offering some added protection?

To solve the backup issue, I guess I could keep my current HS-251+ with it's UX-800P to backup some of the new system, so I would end up:
- New NAS with 2 new UX-800Ps
- HS-251+ with UX-800P for backup

Any thoughts or guidance would be highly appreciated!

Thanks, I hadn't considered the REXP-1000 Pro.
For the purpose of the migration, would I be able to plug my current UX-800P into the new system withouth losing all the data on it?

if the NAS you choose supports the UX, i would think you could plug into it and transfer. or transfer over the network, if nothing else. i wouldn't think the transfer rate would be all that great because of the UX. you would probably make a RTRR job or something to do it.

I need to know for sure whether I'd be able to migrate the UX to the new NAS, because if that's not possible and I've already migrated the 2 HDDs from the HS-251+ to the new NAS, I risk losing the data that's on the UX and for which I don't have any backup.

Following your suggestion, I was looking at the TVS-873, until I just read the announcement of the new TS-x77 series, which supports RAID 50...

if the 251 is still operational, it can go right over the network. is the x77 compatible with UX ?? ... no idea. need to ask Qnap

According to this, it should be compatible :
https://view.publitas.com/qnap-1/ts-x77 ... web/page/8

I guess the easiest option is to keep the 251 + UX as a backup system, and just install the TS-1277 as a new system (instead of a migration), with the possibility of expanding it with the REXP.

Cheers!

Why RAID 50 with only 8 slots? RAID 6 will offer much better redundancy while offering the same usable capacity. RAID isn't better with higher numbers, only different.
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

Maybe I will stick to RAID 6.
If I understand correctly, both the TVS-873 and the TVS-871 need the optional SAS-12G2E adaptor before a REXP-1000 Pro can be attached? Are there any similar desktop models which support the REXP out of the box? I'm not sure if the TS-x77 does.

Not that I know of.

It doesn't.

Instead of buying these expansion chassis that are either slow and expensive (UX-line) or extremely expensive (REXP-line) have you considered buying larger and/or multiple NASes instead?

If you insist on using expansion chassis, maybe the TX-line would be interesting? Much better performance than UX, less expensive than REXP and interfaces available out of the box on the TVS-x82T Series and TVS-871T.

how about another QNAP unit and add to the storage pool via VJBOD (and maybe 10GbE ports for speed)

Thanks for all the good advice. I ended up getting a TVS-873-8G with 8 x 10TB, and using my old setup as a backup NAS.
