TS-253B 16GB supported ?

Post by depoverek »

Dear Support Team,
The datasheets for TS-253B on the website specify 2 x RAM slots (Max 8 GB)
On the Amazon website a version QNAP TS-253B-16GB is sold.

Is 16 GB RAM supported on the device?
Does the OS benefit from this additional memory?
Can the OS address this additional RAM?

In case it is supported, would it allow to run more virtual machines? 4 (16GB)?

Thanks for your support.

on google i saw

16GB Kit (2x8GB) NAS TS-253B

and on the specification page
https://www.qnap.com/en/product/model.p ... 69&event=2

total memory slot: 2 x DDR3L SODIMM slots
(For dual-DIMM configuration, you must use a pair of identical DDR3L modules.)

maximum memory: 8GB

officially the

TS-253B-8G comes with 8GB DDR3L (2 x 4GB)

and the

TS-253B-4G with 4GB DDR3L(2 x 2GB)

hm... maybe you need to create ticket to confirm with them whether it can be self upgraded to 16gb or not.

Anyway, Crashplan likes a lot of ram. For every 1tb they recommend having 1gig of ram or something like that. So for backing up 10+ tb, more ram the better :) thats the one app i know that uses up a lot of ram.

Without providing details on the 4 VMs you want to run it is impossible to say if 253B will support them. It is more than just a memory consideration.
Use the forum search feature before posting.

Use RAID and external backups. RAID will protect you from disk failure, keep your system running, and data accessible while the disk is replaced, and the RAID rebuilt. Backups will allow you to recover data that is lost or corrupted, or from system failure. One does not replace the other.

The same as with many similar questions on some Intel architecture QNAP NAS before, ie. TS-x51, TS-x53, ... QNAP will not claim 16 GB supported, because of Intel does not support more than 8 GB on the Intel® Celeron® Processor J3455. Neither QNAP nor Google, nor Youtube, nor eBay, nor whoever can provide a different answer: Probably workable (at your own risk) is not the same like supported.

It works. 2x8GB modules. It is even detected correctly as 16GB in QNAP. However Intel themselves do not support this memory configuration. God knows why.

works = yes
supported = no

keep your original memory, you may need it to get support, especially if you have to send it in

Any 2x8GB DDR3L RAM, 1600/1866 MHz, SO-DIMM modules will work. I preferred Kingston DDR3L 1600 Mhz module for best compatibility.

What news are you looking for? It has been stated many times that it works.

As long as Intel has the SoC specs set to 8 GB, QNAP can't officially support more. Very unlikely this will change for a released SoC btw,

And if you know that Intel doesn't retest for limits as larger memory modules become available, you don't know what Intel does support. The Intel CPU capabilities may report different values as the Intel data sheets. The CPU may even support a different memory type but the main board will not.

I don't think so. QNAP devices are selective. Not every latency supported by memory modules match the requirements of QNAP devices. Using the same latency as the modules offered by QNAP shop should work. A slightly different latency might work, eventually dependant on the memory module cooling. More latency difference is likely NOT to work.
